Alfred Preis
Alfred Preis (February 2, 1911 – March 29, 1994) was an Austrian-born American architect best known for designing the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. Early years in Austria Born and raised in Vienna, Austria, Preis spent his early architecture career in Vienna. He studied at the Vienna University of Technology, Vienna Technical University, earned his Architecture diploma in 1938, and worked as a site manager for Redlich and Berger and as a freelance designer for interiors, furniture and store fronts. Although of Jews, Jewish background, he converted to Catholic Church, Roman Catholicism in 1936. Newlywed, he and his wife fled Austria in 1939 in the face of the Anschluss, German annexation of his homeland and emigrated to the U.S. with the help of the Catholic Refugee Association. Ellen Preis
Ellen Müller-Preis, née Preis, (6 May 1912 – 18 November 2007) was a German-born Austrian Olympic-champion foil fencer. In 1949, she was named Austrian female athlete of the year. Fencing career Preis was born in Berlin, and was Jewish. She moved to Vienna at the age of 18 in 1930, and began receiving fencing instruction from her aunt. In under two years she came in third in the European Championships in Vienna. She later married Dr. Müller and had two sons and a daughter, who died from whooping cough. World and National Championships She won three world championships (1947, 1949, and 1950) and numerous national Austrian titles (17). In 1949 Müller-Preis was named the first ever "Austrian Female Athlete of the Year." At one point, Prof. Müller-Preis was credited in the Guinness Book of World Records as the female with the longest Olympic span of any woman, competing from 1932 until 1956. Mary Louise Preis (born October 10, 1941) is an American politician who represented district 34 in the Maryland House of Delegates. She was first elected in 1990 and served until 1999. Early life and education Delegate Preis was born in Jacksonville, Illinois. Preis graduated from Fontbonne College with her associate degree in 1963 (cum laude). She received her Master of Science degree in 1967 from Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.
