Portugal–Timor-Leste relations are foreign relations between Portugal and Timor-Leste (formerly East Timor). Timor-Leste has an embassy in Lisbon whilst Portugal has an embassy in Dili. East Timor was a colony of Portugal for over 400 years. Both countries belong to the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. History The Portuguese, in search of spices, first settled Timor in 1520. By the 17th century, the Dutch arrived, settling the western half of the island of Timor. A treaty in 1859 formalized the division. After the East Timorese independence referendum, 1999, referendum on independence on 30 August 1999, Timor-Leste became an independent nation on 20 May 2002 and began initiating diplomatic relations with the rest of the global community. Portuguese Republican National Guard
The National Republican Guard () or GNR is the national gendarmerie force of Portugal. Members of the GNR are military personnel, subject to military law and organisation, unlike the agents of the civilian Public Security Police (PSP). The GNR is responsible for the preventive police and highway patrol in 94% of Portuguese territory. At national level, GNR also has duties of customs enforcement, coastal control, nature protection, search and rescue operations and state ceremonial guards of honor. Since the 2000s, the GNR has provided detachments for participation in international operations in Iraq, East Timor and other theatres. 2006 East Timorese Crisis
The 2006 Timor-Leste crisis began as a conflict between elements of the Timor-Leste Defence Force (F-FDTL) over discrimination within the military and expanded to a coup attempt and general violence throughout the country, centred in the capital Dili. The crisis prompted a military intervention by several other countries and led to the resignation of Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri. Background A pretext for the crisis came from the management of a dispute within the F-FDTL, when soldiers from the western part of the country claimed that they were being discriminated against, in favour of soldiers from the eastern part of the country.
