Portland Penny
The Portland Penny is the name subsequently given to a specific copper Matron Head, matron head one-cent coin, used to decide the name of Portland, Oregon, United States. The City of Portland's two founders, Francis Pettygrove from Portland, Maine and Asa Lovejoy from Boston, Massachusetts, both wanted to name the fledgling site—then known as ''The Clearing''—after their respective home towns. The coin toss was decided in 1845 with two out of three tosses which Pettygrove won. Portland was incorporated in 1851. The coin, minted in 1835, was found in a safe deposit box left behind by Lovejoy and is now on display in the Oregon Historical Society Museum. The Francis Ermatinger House is located in Oregon City, Oregon, United States. Built in 1843, it is the third oldest house in Oregon and the oldest house in Clackamas County. It was built for Francis Ermatinger, Chief Trader of the Hudson's Bay Company Columbia District, and later Treasurer of the Provisional Government of Oregon. Asa Lovejoy
Asa Lawrence Lovejoy (March 14, 1808 – September 10, 1882) was an American pioneer and politician in the region that would become the U.S. state of Oregon. He is best remembered as a founder of the city of Portland, Oregon. He was an attorney in Boston, Massachusetts before traveling by land to Oregon; he was a legislator in the Provisional Government of Oregon, mayor of Oregon City, and a general during the Cayuse War that followed the Whitman massacre in 1847. He was also a candidate for Provisional Governor in 1847, before the Oregon Territory was founded, but lost that election. Lovejoy continued his political career during territorial period as a member of both chambers of the Oregon Territorial Legislature; he served as the first Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives in 1849.
