Pontifical North American College
The Pontifical North American College (NAC) is a Catholic Church, Roman Catholic educational institution in Rome, Italy, that prepares seminarians to become priests in the United States and elsewhere. The NAC also provides a residence for Priesthood (Catholic Church), priests who are pursuing graduate work at other pontifical universities in Rome. The NAC also has a continuing education program for veteran priests. The NAC is the responsibility of the Holy See's Congregation for the Clergy, which delegates its operation to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), acting through the NAC's episcopal board of governors. Founded by Pope Pius IX in 1859 to increase the number of American priests, most of the NAC seminarians come from the United States. The Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (PUST), also known as the ''Angelicum'' or ''Collegio Angelico'' (in honor of its patron, the ''Doctor Angelicus'' Thomas Aquinas), is a pontifical university located in the historic center of Rome, Italy. The ''Angelicum'' is administered by the Dominican Order and is the order's central locus of Thomistic theology and philosophy. The ''Angelicum'' is coeducational and offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in theology, philosophy, canon law, and social sciences, as well as certificates and diplomas in related areas. Janiculum
The Janiculum (; ), occasionally known as the Janiculan Hill, is a hill in western Rome, Italy. Although it is the second-tallest hill (the tallest being Monte Mario) in the contemporary city of Rome, the Janiculum does not figure among the proverbial Seven Hills of Rome, being west of the Tiber and outside the boundaries of the ancient city. Sights The Janiculum is one of the best locations in Rome for a scenic view of central Rome with its domes and bell towers. Other sights on the Janiculum include the church of San Pietro in Montorio, on what was formerly thought to be the site of St Peter's crucifixion; a small shrine known as the Tempietto, designed by Donato Bramante, marks the supposed site of Peter's death. Villa Gabrielli
Villa Gabrielli was an urban villa in Rome. It once comprised a large plot of land on the northernmost part of the Janiculum, just west of the Tiber. Today its land has been divided among the present campuses of the Pontifical North American College and the Pontifical Urban University. The construction of various buildings from 1869 until the present day has significantly altered the original layout of the villa's park, which survived largely intact into the twentieth century. History Origin and development Originally, the large villa occupied almost the entire northern portion of the Janiculum. Gardens and orchards already existed on the site before the property acquired a unitary character. In the Catholic Church, an exemption is the full or partial release of an ecclesiastical person, corporation, or institution from the authority of the ecclesiastical superior next higher in rank. The Maryland General Assembly is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maryland that convenes within the State House in Annapolis.
