Ponte de Sor () is a city and municipality in Portalegre District in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 16,722, in an area of 839.71 km2. The present Mayor is Hugo Hilário, elected by the Socialist Party. The municipal holiday is Easter Monday. Economy The economy of the municipality is based on agriculture – in particular the cork industry, of which the area is one of the biggest producers worldwide – services and light industries ranging from food to aviation. Ponte de Sor Aerodrome is base to several business, such as Sevenair Academy, the biggest flight school in Europe. Maria Laura Santana Maia (born 1937) is a Portuguese lawyer who became the first female member of the Supreme Court of Justice of Portugal in May 2004. Early life and education Maia was born on 8 October 1937 in Ponte de Sor in the Portalegre District of Portugal’s Alentejo region. Her full name was Maria Laura de Carvalho Santana Maia. Her father, António Maria Santana Maia, who originally came from the nearby parish of Mouriscas in the Santarém District, was a lawyer and notary as well as a farmer. José Luís Marques Peixoto (; born September 4, 1974) is a Portuguese author, poet and playwright. A professional writer since 2001, his works have been translated into more than 30 languages. Biography José Luis Peixoto was born in the village of Galveias, in the Portuguese region of Alentejo. He lived in Galveias until the age of 18. He obtained a bachelor's degree in modern languages and literature from NOVA University Lisbon. Vitória Pais Freire de Andrade (18831930) was an active Portuguese feminist who played an important role in the ''Conselho Nacional das Mulheres Portuguesas'' (National Council of Portuguese Women - CNMP) in the 1920s.
