Thiruvallur District, also spelled as Tiruvallur District, is one of the 38 districts (an administrative district) in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The fast developing city of Tiruvallur is the district headquarters. The district has a mixture of urban and rural characteristics. Minjur is a suburb located in the northern outskirts of Chennai, India. It is located in Thiruvallur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Thiruvallur Lok Sabha constituency is a newly formed Lok Sabha (Parliament of India) constituency after the 2008 delimitation. Its Tamil Nadu Parliamentary Constituency number is 1 of 39. It was formed after merging the assembly segments of Gummidipoondi, Ponneri (SC), Tiruvallur, and Poonamallee (SC), Madhavaram, which were earlier parts of Sriperumbudur constituency and the newly formed Avadi. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is the urban planning agency of Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The CMDA administers the Chennai Metropolitan Region, spread over an area of and covers the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Ranipet and Kancheepuram. Sengundram, known in English as Red Hills, is a suburb in the northwestern part of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India in Thiruvallur District. History The first railway proposals for India were made in Madras in 1832. The country's first transport train, ''Red Hill Railway'' (built by Arthur Cotton to transport granite for road-building), ran from Red Hills to the Chintadripet bridge in Madras in 1836-1837. Grand Trunk Road
Grand Trunk Road (formerly known as Uttarapath, Sadak-e-Azam, Shah Rah-e-Azam, Badshahi Sadak, and Long Walk) is one of Asia's oldest and longest major roads. For at least 2,500 years it has linked Central Asia to the Indian subcontinent.
