Pombal () is a city and a municipality located in the historical Beira Litoral province and in the região de Leiria of portuguese Leiria district. The population in 2011 was , in an area of 626.00 km2. The population of the city of Pombal proper is about inhabitants. The municipality is served by a railway station which is part of the Linha do Norte, the main Portuguese railway line that connects its two largest cities, Lisbon and Porto. The Mayor is Luís Diogo de Paiva Morão Alves Mateus since 2013, elected by the Social Democratic Party. The municipal holiday is November 11 and celebrates St. Martin's Day. In 2017, an 82-foot-long skeleton of a possible sauropod dinosaur was uncovered in a Pombal property owner's backyard. The Castle of Pombal () is a medieval castle in the freguesia, civil parish of Pombal (parish), Pombal, concelho, municipality of the Pombal Municipality, same name in the district of Leiria (district), Leiria in the Centro, Portugal, Centre region of Portugal. History Around 1128, the Castle of Pombal, which was originally a former Roman castro and Arab fortress, was donated to the Knights Templar by Afonso Henriques in order to defend Coimbra and which included a vast territory of land. The transfer of its control during that period, was seen as an important military position, owing to its successive generations of fortification and disputes between Christian and Muslim forces.
