Polyball
The Polyball is the most prestigious public event of the ETH Zurich. It has a long tradition since the 1880s and takes place annually at the end of November. The Polyball is the biggest decorated ball in Europe with approximately 9000 visitors and is a classic dance event. History The exact year and the location of the first Polyball - then known as ''Akademie'' - is unknown. A general assumption is that the first ball took place in 1880. In 1929, the name changed from Akademie to Polyball. Since the 1940s each Polyball has its one theme with respective decorations of the ballrooms. Ball (dance Party)
A ball is a formal dance event often characterised by a banquet followed by a social dance. Ball dancing emerged from formal dances during the Middle Ages and carried on through different iterations throughout succeeding centuries, such as the 17th century Baroque dance and the 18th century cotillion. Several variations exists such as the masquerade and debutante ball as well as the more modern prom. Etymology The word ''ball'' derives from the Latin word , meaning 'to dance', and ''bal'' was used to describe a formal dancing party in French in the 12th century. The '' ballo'' was an Italian Renaissance word for a type of elaborate court dance, and developed into one for the event at which it was performed. The word also covered performed pieces like '' Il ballo delle ingrate'' by Claudio Monteverdi (1608). Zürich Opera House
The Zurich Opera House () is an opera house in the Swiss city of Zurich. Located at the Sechseläutenplatz, it has been the home of the Zurich Opera since 1891, and also houses the Bernhard-Theater Zürich. It is also home to Ballett Zürich. It received the "Opera Company of the Year" award at the 2014 International Opera Awards. History The first permanent theatre in Zurich, the , was built in 1834 and it became the focus of Richard Wagner’s activities during his period of exile from Germany. The burnt down in 1890. The new (municipal theatre) was built by the Viennese architects Fellner & Helmer, who changed their previous design for the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, theatre in Wiesbaden only slightly. Dolder Grand
The Dolder Grand (formerly known as Grand Hotel Dolder) is a luxury hotel in the Swiss city of Zurich. It is located on Adlisberg hill, some from, and above, the city centre. Built in 1899, the hotel spreads out over and offers 173 rooms and suites, two restaurants, a bar, 13 conference rooms and a spa. The hotel is connected to central Zurich by road, and by the Dolderbahn rack railway, which has its upper terminus next to the hotel complex. History The Dolder Grand Hotel & Curhaus was built between 1897 and 1899, to a design by the architect :de:Jacques Gros, Jacques Gros from Basel for the restaurateur Heinrich Hürlimann. Hürlimann had previously developed the nearby Dolder Waldhaus hotel, also designed by Gros, and the Dolderbahn to serve it. The Dolder Grand opened on 10 May 1899, and was extended in 1924 and 1964.
