William Mitchell (North Dakota)
William Mitchell was an educator, Civil War veteran, and North Dakota public servant who served as the first North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1889 until his sudden death in 1890. Biography William Mitchell was born near Mount Vernon in Knox County, Ohio. His birth year is disputed. Some sources claim 1828 or 1829, and other sources claim it was 1830. William was the oldest of nine children born to Rev. John Mitchell and Anne (Ogden) Mitchell. He married Catharine Haller in 1854 and they had three children. During the Civil War, Mitchell was employed as a teacher in Ohio. He left the classroom and served as a captain in Company A of the 96th Ohio Infantry Regiment. From then on, he preferred to be called "Captain" Mitchell. He served as superintendent of instruction in Columbus, Ohio, for several years. In 1883, he moved to Fargo, North Dakota. John Flittie
John Flittie (March 22, 1856 – January 21, 1913) was a U.S. politician who served as North Dakota's first Secretary of State from 1889 to 1892. Johan Flittie was born in Lesja, in Oppland, Norway. He was the son of Johannes Throndson Flittie and Anna Johannesdotter Flittie. His family emigrated to North America in 1867, settling in Watonwan County, Minnesota. He graduated from Mankato Normal School (now Minnesota State University, Mankato) in 1878 and moved to Dakota Territory soon after. He was a member of the Dakota Territorial Council (the upper house of the territorial legislature) in 1885–1886, and won election as a Republican to the newly created office of Secretary of State in 1889. After serving an abbreviated 1-year term, he was re-elected to a full 2-year term in 1890. He did not seek re-election in 1892. John Miller (North Dakota Politician)
John Miller (October 29, 1843October 26, 1908) was a bonanza farmer, business man and American History of the United States Republican Party, Republican politician in North Dakota. He served as the first governor of North Dakota from 1889 to 1891, after it was admitted as a state to the union. Born of Scotch ancestors in the Finger Lakes region of New York state, Miller had moved to the Dakota Territory in 1878. With a partner he bought thousands of acres of land for what was called bonanza farming: large-scale farming of wheat as a commodity crop on an industrial scale. The Northern Pacific Railroad connected such farms to the populous eastern markets. He became a wealthy partner or owner of three major agricultural companies; the last also provided milling and other services.
