PointsBet Invitational
The PointsBet Invitational is an annual curling tournament put on by Curling Canada as one of its four "Season of Champions" events (along with the Scotties, the Brier and either the men's or women's World Curling Championships). The tournament is held as a single-elimination tournament, and features the top ranked teams in the country, as well as the winners of certain national championships such as the Canadian Junior Curling Championships, the Canadian University Curling Championships, the Canadian College Curling Championships and the Canadian Curling Club Championships. The winning teams receive $50,000. The event began in 2022, and consists of 16 teams. It is broadcast on television on TSN and is sponsored by PointsBet, an online gambling website. The NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, branded as March Madness, or The Big Dance, is a single-elimination tournament played in the United States to determine the men's college basketball national champion of the NCAA Division I, Division I level in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). 2023 PointsBet Invitational
The 2023 PointsBet Invitational curling tournament was held from September 27 to October 1 at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Ontario. The event featured thirty-two Canadian teams and was the first major event of the 2023–24 season. It was played in a single-elimination tournament with the winning team on both the men's and women's sides receiving $50,000 each. Qualification The top 10 ranked men's and women's 2022–23 CTRS standings qualified for the event first. The 2023 Ontario men's and women's champions also qualified. Ryan Harnden
Ryan Harnden (born June 28, 1986) is a Canadian curler. He currently plays lead on Team Matt Dunstone. He is the former lead for the Brad Jacobs rink, with whom he represented Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics, winning a gold medal. Career Early career Ryan joined forces with his father Eric Harnden for the 2007–08 season, as his second. The team, which also included brother E. J. and Caleb Flaxey at lead won the Dominion Northern Ontario Men's Curling Championship that season, and would represent Northern Ontario at the 2008 Tim Hortons Brier. Colton Lott
Colton Lott (born July 21, 1995) is a Canadian curler. He currently plays third on Team Matt Dunstone, and also curls with Kadriana Lott in mixed doubles. Career Juniors Lott's first curling success came with representing Manitoba at the 2011 Canada Winter Games, where he won a bronze medal, playing third for the team, which was skipped by Kyle Doering. This same team won the Manitoba Junior championship in 2012, and represented the province at the 2012 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. There, the team posted a 9-3 round robin record, won a tiebreaker, and then settled for the bronze medal, after losing to Northern Ontario in the semifinal. Matt Dunstone
Matthew Dunstone, nicknamed "the Sheriff" (born June 25, 1995) is a Canadian curler originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Career Dunstone won the Canadian Junior Curling Championships in 2013. He represented Canada at the 2013 World Junior Curling Championships, where he won the bronze medal. He was unable to defend his championship at the 2014 Canadian Juniors after losing in the finals of the Manitoba Canola Juniors to Braden Calvert. The next time he would represent Manitoba was in 2016, after winning the 2016 Manitoba Canola Juniors. This earned the Dunstone rink a spot in the 2016 Canadian Juniors where he won his second title after defeating Northern Ontario 11-4 in the final, and represented Canada at the 2016 World Junior Curling Championships, winning a bronze medal. Connor Njegovan
Connor Njegovan (born June 23, 1992) is a Canadian curler from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He currently plays lead on Team Reid Carruthers. Career Juniors Njegovan made his first and only Canadian Junior Curling Championships appearance in 2010 playing second for the Alex Forrest rink. The team finished the round robin in first place only suffering two losses to Northern Ontario and Saskatchewan. This meant the team had an automatic bye to the final. Derek Samagalski
Derek Samagalski (born September 9, 1984) is a Canadian curler who currently resides in Carberry, Manitoba. Career Samagalski gained notoriety when he won the 2012 Safeway Championship again as a lead on the Rob Fowler team to represent Manitoba at the Tim Hortons Brier. Samagalski was named the first-team all star for lead at the Brier following their bronze medal victory. Samagalski would then join the Reid Carruthers rink as second during the 2014–15 curling season, alongside Braeden Moskowy, and Colin Hodgson. Jason Gunnlaugson
Jason Gunnlaugson is a Canadian curler currently living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Gunnlaugson is known for having been hired by the Russian Curling Federation (RCF) to represent the country at the 2014 Winter Olympics. The deal which was announced in April 2010 fell through in November that year, when the Gunnlaugson team was fired by the RCF. Career Prior to his deal to play for Russia, Gunnlaugson had skipped his team out of Beausejour, Manitoba. Reid Carruthers
Reid Carruthers (born December 30, 1984) is a Canadian curler from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Carruthers was the 2011 world champion—winning gold as a second on Jeff Stoughton's team—as well as an eight-time provincial champion, the 2003 junior provincial champion, and the 2008 Manitoba provincial mixed champion. He coaches the Kerri Einarson women's team. Career As a junior curler, Carruthers skipped Manitoba at the 2003 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. He would lead the team to a 4-8 round robin record. After juniors, he skipped a team with Jason Gunnlaugson, Derek Samagalski and Tyler Forrest to a provincial final against Jeff Stoughton in 2006.
