Pointfest
Pointfest is a large outdoor rock music festival held once a year by radio station KPNT in St. Louis, Missouri at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre (formerly known as Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, UMB Bank Pavilion, and Riverport Amphitheater). Local music favorites the Urge, Gravity Kills, Story of the Year, Ludo, and Greek Fire have made several appearances as well. Traditionally, there is a main stage where the larger acts and headliners perform, and two or more stages off to the sides of the lawn for other bands (one of them usually reserved for local bands). The side stages will play from the start of the concert (generally around 10 am) to when the main stage will start playing (generally around 6 pm). The Urge
The Urge is an alternative rock band based in St. Louis, Missouri. Their music combines several genres, including hardcore punk, heavy metal, ska, reggae, funk, rock, and rhythm and blues. Consistent touring throughout the 1990s earned the band a reputation for high-energy live performances. History Early career (1987–1994) The Urge was originally formed in 1987 by Webster Groves High School classmates Jeff Herschel (drums) and Karl Grable (bass), and Pat Malecek (guitar) of Saint Louis University High School. The band went through two singers before recruiting Steve Ewing for vocal duties in late 1987. Their first album was released on August 12, 1989, the cassette-only ''Bust Me Dat Forty'', followed a year later by the LP ''Puttin' the Backbone Back'' on August 9, which featured the addition of saxophonist Jordan Chalden who joined the band at the end of 1989. KPNT
KPNT (105.7 FM, "105-7 The Point") is a commercial radio station licensed to Collinsville, Illinois, and broadcasting to Greater St. Louis. It mainly airs an alternative rock radio format, with some elements of active rock. It is owned by Hubbard Broadcasting. KPNT has studios and offices in Creve Coeur (with a St. Louis address). The transmitter is off Mackenzie Road in Shrewsbury, just outside the St. Louis city limits, on a tower used by numerous local TV and FM stations. KPNT broadcasts in HD, and similar to their primary channel, KPNT's HD2 and HD3 sub-channels feature a replay of sports radio "The Morning After STL". History KPNT is considered a "move-in" station. Greek Fire (band)
Greek Fire is an American rock band from St. Louis, Missouri. The band was formed in 2008 by members of Story of the Year and Maybe Today. Since formation, Greek Fire has released a self-titled EP, a single titled "Doesn't Matter Anyway", on August 16, 2011, they released their debut, full-length album, ''Deus Ex Machina'', and have recently announced a new addition to the ''Lost/Found'' EPs titled ''Broken'' set to be released before ''Found''. Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre (Maryland Heights, Missouri)
The Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre (originally Riverport Amphitheatre and formerly the UMB Bank Pavilion and Verizon Wireless Amphitheater) is an outdoor concert venue in Maryland Heights, Missouri, near St. Louis. History The venue was built for approximately $12 million, and opened on June 14, 1991, with a performance by Steve Winwood. Shortly after opening, the amphitheater became the site of the infamous Riverport Riot, July 2, 1991, during a Guns N' Roses concert, during their '' Use Your Illusion Tour''. In 1998, the local promoter Contemporary Group, who built the amphitheater, was acquired by SFX. SFX corporate successor Live Nation Entertainment continues to own and operate the venue. Ludo (band)
Ludo is an alternative rock band from St. Louis, Missouri. The band consists of lead vocalist/guitarist Andrew Volpe, lead guitarist/back up vocalist Tim Ferrell, moog/synth and back up vocalist Tim Convy, drummer/back up vocalist Matt Palermo, and bassist/back up vocalist Dave "Deepcut" Heltibrand. Ludo released their first album in 2003, then two more before going on hiatus in 2012. A reunion show in 2018 sold out quickly, and Ludo has since generally performed a handful of times a year. History Early years Ludo's origins can be traced to songs written while Andrew Volpe was attending John Burroughs School in Ladue, Missouri. The Smithereens
The Smithereens are an American rock band from Carteret, New Jersey, United States. The group formed in 1980 with members Pat DiNizio (vocals & guitar), Jim Babjak (guitar & vocals), Mike Mesaros (bass guitar & vocals), and Dennis Diken (drums & percussion). This original lineup continued until 2006, when Mesaros left the band and Severo Jornacion took over on bass guitar until Mesaros' return in 2016. After DiNizio died in 2017, the band continued performing live shows as a trio (Babjak, Mesaros and Diken) with various guest vocalists. Material Issue
Material Issue was an American power pop trio from Chicago, Illinois. The band's trademark is pop songs with themes of love and heartbreak. A number of their song titles used girls' first names. History Material Issue was formed in 1985, led by frontman Jim Ellison, who played guitar, sang lead vocals, and wrote most of the band's songs. Ellison met bassist Ted Ansani while both were attending Columbia College Chicago in 1986. Drummer Mike Zelenko was found through an ad in the ''Illinois Entertainer'' later that year. In 1987, Material Issue released an eponymous EP on their own label, Big Block. The label operated out of Ellison's bedroom at his parents' home in Addison, Illinois, and was named for the big block engines of the 1970s muscle cars Ellison loved. Dramarama (band)
Dramarama is an American, New Jersey–based alternative rock/power pop band, who later moved to Los Angeles. The band was formed in New Jersey in 1982 and disbanded in 1994. The band formally reunited in 2003 following an appearance on VH1's ''Bands Reunited'' reality show. Since 1996, an evolving lineup of the band, always fronted by singer/songwriter John Easdale, has been performing in one incarnation or another (initially billed as Easdale solo but usually joined by former Dramarama bandmates), and from then until 2003 played occasional shows in the L.A. area, as well as in New Jersey.
