It is located on a floodplain terrace over the Dnieper between the Kyiv Hills and the lower stream of Pochaina River. Podil is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Kyiv, and the birthplace of the city's trade, commerce and industry. Kontraktova Square
Square of Contracts or Contract Square (, ) is a square in the historic Podil neighborhood of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The square is an important economic, cultural, and transport center of Podil, containing numerous architectural and historical monuments. History Contract Square is known since the Kyivan Rus' times as an important part of the Podil merchant neighborhood. The square lies surrounded by the Andriivskyi Descent, Sahaidachny, Pokrivska, Florivska, Prytisko-Mykilska, Kostiantynivska, Mezhyhirska, Spaska, Skovorody and Ilynska streets. Borychiv Descent
Borychiv Descent (, translit.: ''Borychiv uzviz'') is a historic descent in the historical and merchant quarter of Kyiv, the Podil (''Podol'') neighbourhood. It is located near the Poshtova Square. Its legendary name, ''Borichev Descent'', is derived from either the name of a wealthy ''Kyivan'' who lived there at the turn of the 19th century, or from the word ''borych/biruch'' (), which means a herald and customs officer serving the Kyiv Prince in the Middle Ages. Some scholars believe that today's Borychiv Descent corresponds to the legendary one mentioned in the 12th century poem, The Tale of Igor's Campaign (''Slovo o polku Ihorevim''); others state that the ancient ''Borychev Descent'' is actually today's '' Andriyivskyi Descent''. Ascension Convent (Kyiv)
__NOTOC__ The Ascension Convent (, ) in the Kyivan neighbourhood of Podil, also known as the ''Florivsky'', originated in the 16th century as the wooden church of Sts. Florus and Laurus. History The convent greatly expanded at the time of the Great Northern War, when Peter the Great ordered the relocation of the old Ascension Convent on Pechersk Hill with the aim of building an arsenal there. Kyiv Mohyla Academy
The National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy ( NaUKMA, ), colloquially known as Mohylianka (), is a highly ranked national state-sponsored research university located in a historic section of Kyiv, Ukraine. The university is bilingual in Ukrainian and English and is one of Ukraine's few universities with internationally recognized diplomas. NaUKMA takes part in numerous international university collaborations, such as the European University Association. With around 4000 students, NaUKMA is one of the smallest universities in Ukraine. Pyrohoshcha Church
The Pyrohoshcha Dormition of the Mother of God Church () or simply Pyrohoshcha Church ( ) is an Orthodox church in Kyiv in the historical neighbourhood Podil. The original church was built in 1130s by the Mstyslav I the Great of Kyiv. It was the main church of Podil, and was a temporary cathedral of Kyiv Metropolitanate in the early 17 century. In 1613 the church was reconstructured in Renaissance style, and then in 18th-19th centuries was rebuilt in Ukrainian Baroque and Neoclassicism styles. In 1934, the church became the cathedral of Ukrainian Autocephalous Church when its center moved from Kharkiv to Kyiv together with the capital of Ukrainian SSR. But it was in that status less than a year, being destroyed in 1935 by the Soviet administration for the reason of "reconstructing the square". Old Kyiv
Old Kyiv (, ) is a historical neighborhood of Kyiv. Other names include Upper City, Old Town, and others. It is located at the far eastern portion of the Shevchenko Raion, Kyiv , Shevchenkivskyi District. Old Kyiv historically represents the city of Yaroslav the Wise before it was presumably destroyed by the Mongol invasion of Batu Khan in 1240. Originated at the Old Kyiv Hill (Starokyivska Hora), it was created in contrast to the Lower City, Podil. Presumably it started out from the ancient settlement of Kyi sometime at the start of the 6th century. In the 9–10th centuries it covered only mostly at the western portion of the Old Kyiv Hill. Today at that location stands the National Historical Museum of Ukraine.
