Pocahontas is a city in and the county seat of Randolph County, Arkansas, Randolph County, Arkansas, United States, along the Black River (Arkansas), Black River. According to the 2010 Census Bureau, the population of the city was 6,608. Pocahontas has a number of historic buildings, including the Old Randolph County Courthouse built in 1871, the St. Mary's African Methodist Episcopal Church, AME Church, and the Pocahontas Colored School built in 1918, the latter of which is now home to the Eddie Mae Herron Center. Pocahontas
Pocahontas (, ; born Amonute, also known as Matoaka and Rebecca Rolfe; 1596 – March 1617) was a Native American woman belonging to the Powhatan people, notable for her association with the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. She was the daughter of Powhatan, the paramount chief of a network of tributary tribes in the Tsenacommacah, encompassing the Tidewater region of what is today the U.S. state of Virginia. Pocahontas was captured and held for ransom by English colonists during hostilities in 1613. During her captivity, she was encouraged to convert to Christianity and was baptized under the name Rebecca. She married the tobacco planter John Rolfe in April 1614 at the age of about 17 or 18, and she bore their son, Thomas Rolfe, in January 1615. O'Kean, Arkansas
O'Kean is a town in Randolph County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 192 at the 2020 census. History O’Kean was settled before the Civil War, and is named for the priest of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Father James O’Kean, who frequently stopped in the community en route to nearby Pocahontas. With the construction of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway in the 1870s, O’Kean expanded rapidly. A railroad tie manufacturing operation was among the businesses established in the city during the period. O’Kean incorporated in 1913. Geography O'Kean is bordered by Greene County to the east, and one mile north of Lawrence County. Reyno, Arkansas
Reyno is a city in Randolph County, Arkansas, Randolph County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 456 at the 2010 census. History The town was originally called Needmore, and was located one and one-half miles south of its present location. This name was changed to Cherokee Bay when the post office operating by that name moved there from its location at Shoemaker's Ferry on Current River (Ozarks), Current River. The name was changed again, this time to Reyno, a shortened version of Reynolds, named for Dennis Wells Reynolds, a merchant who opened the town's first store and built the first home there in 1857. In 1901, the town relocated to its present site to be adjacent to the newly built St. Louis-San Francisco Railway there. Upon relocation, the new town adopted the name of Esselwood, but reverted to Reyno due to the majority of residents moving from the previous location. Maynard is a town in Randolph County, Arkansas, Randolph County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 379 at the 2020 census. Maynard is home to the Maynard Pioneer Museum and Park. A jail built in 1936 has a door made of wagon, wagon wheel rims. The last time it was used was in 1988, when it temporarily housed a man charged with public intoxication. The jail is beside Maynard Community Center. History Maynard was settled in the late 19th century. John Maynard, formerly a captain in the Confederate Army, spent some time in Texas before moving to Arkansas in 1872, where he opened a dry goods store, and farmed 900 acres, mostly cotton. The Natchitoches Trace was a prehistoric American Indian path that led from the mouth of the Missouri River to present-day Natchitoches, Louisiana. Lawrence County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,216. The county seat is Walnut Ridge.
