Planters Nut & Chocolate Company is an American snack food company now owned by Hormel Foods. Planters is best known for its processed nuts and for the Mr. Peanut icon that symbolizes them. Mr. Peanut was created by grade schooler Antonio Gentile for a 1916 contest to design the company's brand icon. The design was modified by a commercial artist and has continued to change over the years. History Planters was founded by Italian immigrant Amedeo Obici in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He started his career as a bellhop and fruit stand vendor in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Obici later moved to Wilkes-Barre, opened his own fruit stand, and invested in a peanut roaster. Amedeo Obici
Amedeo Obici (July 15, 1877 – May 22, 1947) was an Italian-born American businessman and philanthropist who founded Planters. Biography Early life Obici was born in Oderzo in the Veneto region of Italy to Pietro Ludovico Obici and Luigia Carolina Sartori. His father died when Amedeo was seven years old, leaving behind his widow, young Amedeo, another son, Frank, and two daughters. In 1889, his mother's brother, Vittorio Sartori, invited him to come to the United States. The uncle, his wife and two children had earlier emigrated and lived in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Amedeo was unable to speak English at the time. When he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean from Le Havre, France in March 1889, his destination was written on a label tied through a buttonhole on his coat. Honey-roasted peanuts are a salt-, sugar- and honey-flavored peanut snack food that is provided as a mass-produced product line by several nut and snack food companies, such as Planters, The Sun Valley Nut Co., and King Nut. History Before the 1980s, legumes were glazed before being roasted, resulting in a messy, sticky product that "lost both flavor and color", according to the ''News and Observer''. Planters introduced a honey roasted nut mix in 1985. In 1987, former North Carolina State University food scientist Bill Hoover, working in his home basement lab after he retired, developed a method to glaze the nuts after roasting. Hoover's method roasts the legumes first, then while the nuts are between 160 and 350 degrees, coats them with the glaze. The resulting product is less sticky and retains freshness longer.
