The Place de la République (, ) is a square located in the Bellecour quarter in the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon, France. It is crossed by the Rue de la République along a north-south axis. It belongs to the zone classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. History The square was created in the dense urban web of the Presqu'île at the same time as the Rue Impériale (now named Rue de la République) in the second half of the 19th century when major works were led by the Prefect of Rhône Claude-Marius Vaïsse. Between 1862 and 1871, it was named Place Impériale, then renamed Place de Lyon. When the Rue de Lyon was renamed Rue de la République (by a prefectoral order on 5 September 1878), the square probably received its current name. Originally, there was a fountain at the centre, flanked by two flower beds and trees at the east and the west. Place Bellecour
The Place Bellecour () is a large square in the centre of Lyon, France, to the north of the Ainay district. Measuring 312 m by 200 m (6.2 ha or 15 acres), it is one of the largest open squares (without any patches of greenery or trees) in Europe, and the third biggest square in France, behind the Place des Quinconces in Bordeaux (12.6 ha) and the Place de la Concorde in Paris (8.6 ha). It is also the largest pedestrian square in Europe: vehicles are allowed on the Place de la Concorde and Place des Quinconces. In the middle is an equestrian statue of King Louis XIV by François-Frédéric Lemot (1825). Another statue, representing the Petit Prince and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, is at the west end of the square. Rue Édouard-Herriot
The Rue Édouard-Herriot (or Rue du Président-Édouard-Herriot ) is one of the most important shopping streets of the Presqu'île in Lyon. It links the two most famous places of the city, the Place Bellecour (south) and the Place des Terreaux (north). Its northern part is located in the 1st arrondissement of Lyon, but the main part of the street is in the 2nd arrondissement. In its southern part, the street passes through the Place des Jacobins. Traboules (from Latin ''transambulare'' via vulgar Latin ''trabulare'' meaning "to cross") are a type of secret covered passageways primarily associated with the city of Lyon, France, but also located in the French cities of Villefranche-sur-Saône, Mâcon, and Saint-Étienne, along with a few in Chambéry. In Lyon, they were originally used by silk manufacturers and other merchants to transport their products. Lacking water, the inhabitants moved to the banks of the Saône (in the 'lower town', at the foot of the Fourvière hill). Jean De Tournes
Jean de Tournes (; 1504–1564) was a French printer, book publisher and bookseller, and the founder of a long-lasting family printing business. From 1559 he was the , printer to the French king. Life Jean de Tournes was born in Lyon in 1504. He was apprenticed in the printing workshop of Gaspard and Melchior Trechsel, and then worked for about ten years as a compositor in the workshops of Sébastien Gryphe. In 1542 de Tournes set up his own shop, where from 1547 until 1563 he was in partnership with his son-in-law Guillaume Gazeau. He was a learned humanist, and published accurate editions of works of both ancient and modern authors. Until 1547 he employed the engraver Georges Riverdy for illustrated works; after that date he used the noted engraver Bernard Salomon. He converted to Protestantism in about 1545. Childebert I (  496 – 13 December 558) was a Frankish King of the Merovingian dynasty, as third of the four sons of Clovis I who shared the kingdom of the Franks upon their father's death in 511. Lyon Metro Line A
Line A () is a line on the Lyon Metro that runs between Perrache and Vaulx-en-Velin–La Soie. It was constructed using the cut-and-cover method, and went into service on 2 May 1978.
