Pius Ngandu Nkashama
Pius Ngandu Nkashama was a professor, writer, playwright, poet and literary critic. He was born September 4, 1946 in Mbujimayi in the province of Kasai Oriental in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He died on December 19, 2023 in Baton-Rouge, Louisiana, US. Education and academic career After earning a degree in philosophy and letters from Lovanium University in 1970, he was appointed assistant professor and then professor at the National University of Zaire (Lubumbashi). He also led the Centre for African Studies. In the late 1970s, he moved to France where he obtained in 1981 a Doctorate in Literature and Humanities at the University of Strasbourg. He then traveled the world, teaching in various universities (Annaba and Constantine in Algeria, Limoges and the Sorbonne in France). Mbujimayi
Mbuji-Mayi (formerly Bakwanga) is a Cities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, city and the Capital (political), capital of Kasai-Oriental Province in the south-central Democratic Republic of Congo. It is thought to be the second largest city in the country, after the capital Kinshasa and ahead of Lubumbashi, Kisangani and Kananga, though its exact population is not known. Estimates range from a 2010 ''The World Factbook, CIA World Factbook'' estimated population of 1,480,000 to as many as 3,500,000 estimated by the United Nations in 2008. Mbuji-Mayi lies in Luba people, Luba country on the Mbuji-Mayi River. The National Institute of Arts, Kinshasa (l'Institut National des Arts or INA) is a higher educational institution that provides training to performance artists in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The INA was established on 1 December 1967, at first called the National Conservatory of Music and Dramatic Arts (Conservatoire National de Musique et d’Arts Dramatiques). The objective was to discover national cultural identities through intangible heritages such as music. In September 2009 it was reported that the building that housed the Institute had been sold to a South African company. Williams Sassine (1944 in Kankan, Guinea – February 9, 1997 in Conakry, Guinea) was a Guinean novelist who wrote in French. Life His father was Lebanese Christian and his mother was a Guinean of Muslim heritage. Sassine was an expatriate African writer in France after leaving Guinea when it received independence under Sékou Touré. As a novelist he wrote of marginalized characters, but he became more optimistic on Touré's death. His 1979 novel '' Le jeune homme de sable'' has been regarded as among the best 20th-century African novels. Few of his works have been translated into English, but ''Wirriyamu'' was published in an English translation in 1980. Luba-Kasai, also known as Cilubà or Tshilubà, Luba-Lulua, is a Bantu language ( Zone L) of Central Africa and a national language of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, alongside Lingala, Swahili, and Kikongo ya leta. An eastern dialect is spoken by the Luba people of the East Kasai Region and a western dialect by the Lulua people of the West Kasai Region. The total number of speakers was estimated at 6.3 million in 1991. Within the Zone L Bantu languages, Luba-Kasai is one of a group of languages which form the "Luba" group, together with Kaonde (L40), Kete (L20), Kanyok, Luba-Katanga (KiLuba), Sanga, Zela and Bangubangu.
