Pitrè Prize
The Giuseppe Pitrè – Salvatore Salomone Marino International Prize for Ethnohistory () is awarded since 1958 for an outstanding book or long essay on demoethnoanthropological issues. The prize is one of the oldest and most distinguished awards granted in the field of Cultural anthropology and Ethnohistory. It is named in honour of Giuseppe Pitrè. University Of Palermo
The University of Palermo () is a public university, public research university in Palermo, Italy. It was founded in 1806, and is currently organized in 12 Faculties. History The University of Palermo was officially founded in 1806, although its earliest roots date back to 1498 when medicine and law were taught there. Starting from the second half of the 16th century, from their seat at the Collegio Massimo al Cassero, the Jesuit Fathers granted degrees in Theology and Philosophy - subjects in which they had been masters for over 200 years. In 1767 they were expelled from the kingdom by Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, Ferdinand I, until 37 years later, when they returned to take their seat - which in the meantime had been turned into the Regia Accademia. At this time, Ferdinand I decided to grant a good seat to the Accademia, moving its location to the Convent of the Teatini Fathers next to the Church of St. Giuseppe. Cultural Anthropology
Cultural anthropology is a branch of anthropology focused on the study of cultural variation among humans. It is in contrast to social anthropology, which perceives cultural variation as a subset of a posited anthropological constant. Ethnohistory
Ethnohistory is the study of cultures and indigenous peoples customs by examining historical records as well as other sources of information on their lives and history. It is also the study of the history of various ethnic groups that may or may not still exist. The term is most commonly used in writing about the history of the Americas. Giuseppe Pitrè
Giuseppe Pitrè (22 December 184110 April 1916) was an Italian people, Italian Folkloristics, folklorist, medical doctor, professor, and senator for Sicily. As a folklorist he is credited with extending the concept of folklore to include all manifestations of popular life. He is also considered a forerunner in the field of medical history. Pitrè was born in Palermo. After serving as a volunteer Expedition of the Thousand, in 1860 under Giuseppe Garibaldi, Garibaldi, and graduating in medicine in 1866, he threw himself into the study of literature, and wrote the first scientific studies on Italian popular culture, pioneering Italian ethnographic studies. He founded the study of "folk psychology", in Sicily, teaching at the University of Palermo. Between 1871 and 1913, he compiled the ''Biblioteca delle tradizioni popolari siciliane'' ("Library of Sicilian popular traditions"), a collection of Sicilian oral culture in twenty-five volumes. Maja Bošković-Stulli
Maja Bošković-Stulli (9 November 1922 – 14 August 2012) was a Croatian slavicist and folklorist, literary historian, writer, publisher and an academic, noted for her extensive research of Croatian oral literature. Early life Bošković-Stulli was born in Osijek to a Jewish family of Dragutin and Ivanka Bošković. She joined the Young Communist League of Yugoslavia – SKOJ (from Serbo-Croatian: ''Savez komunističke omladine Jugoslavije'') during Gymnasium education. In 1943, after the capitulation of Italy and liberation of the Rab concentration camp, she joined the Partisans. Many members of her family perished during the Holocaust, including her parents and sister Magda. Education and later years Bošković-Stulli finished elementary and secondary school in Zagreb. Juha Pentikäinen
Juha Pentikäinen (born 26 February 1940) is a professor emeritus of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Helsinki and a professor of northern ethnography at the University of Lapland and the Institute for Northern Culture in Helsinki. With a field-work oriented approach to the study of religious traditions he is especially interested in the oral history of languages, religions and cultures. Research He has research interests in religious traditions in the Finnish culture, and their psychological effects on humans. Anna Birgitta Rooth
Anna "Anta" Birgitta Rooth (15 May 1919 – 5 June 2000) was the first Swedish professor of ethnology at Uppsala University. She is known for her research into folklore, especially the Cinderella story. Early life and education Anna Birgitta Rooth was born on 15 May 1919, in Ängelholm, Sweden, to Hildegard Sofia Helena and Nore Valfrid Waldermarson. She had two brothers, Bertil and Bo Waldemarson. Rooth enjoyed reading as a child and at 19, gained a school-leaving certificate at Lunds privata elementarskola, allowing her to attend Lund University the same year. Starting in 1938, she studied art history at Lund University. She began pursuing folkloric research and served as editor and secretary to Carl Wilhelm von Sydow, who headed folkloric research at Lund. Philip Carl Salzman (born c.1940) is professor emeritus of anthropology at McGill University, Quebec, Canada. Background Salzman graduated from Antioch College in Ohio, United States in 1962, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1972 with a thesis on "Adaptation and change among the Yarahmadzai Baluch". Sergey Yurievich Neklyudov () (born March 31, 1941) is a Soviet and Russian philosopher, folklorist and orientalist. , he is professor and scientific director of the Center for Typology and Semiotics of Folklore at the Russian State University for the Humanities.
