Piotta is a village in the Quinto, Ticino, municipality of Quinto in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Geography The village, located next to the neighbouring Ambrì, lies in the Leventina Valley, below the Lepontine Alps, and is crossed in the middle by Ticino (river), Ticino river. It is 3 km far from Quinto, 5 from Airolo and 52 from Bellinzona. Transport Piotta is the location of the base station of the Ritom funicular, linking the village to Lago Ritom, Ritom Lake. Along with the neighbouring village of Ambrì, Piotta is served by the infrequently served Ambrì-Piotta railway station on the Gotthard railway, and is located close to Ambri Airport. Sport The village hosts the professional ice hockey team HC Ambrì-Piotta, that plays in indoor sporting arena of "Valascia", located in Ambrì. Ambrì is a Swiss village in the municipality of Quinto, Ticino, Quinto, Leventina District, Canton of Ticino. Valascia
Valascia was an indoor sporting arena located in Ambrì, Switzerland. The capacity of the arena was 6,500 and was built in 1959. It served as the home arena of the HC Ambri-Piotta ice hockey team of the National League (NL) from 1959 to 2021. Even when the rink was being covered with a roof in 1979, the ends of the arena stayed open, making hockey being played there partially outdoor with low temperatures in the arena. The team moved to the nearby newly built arena for the 2021/22 season. Valascia has been destroyed and renatured in summer 2022 as it was located in a potential avalanche path. Renovation wasn't possible as it would bring the total capacity below the required 6,000 to compete in the National League and the arena would still face danger from potential avalanches. Hockey Club Ambrì-Piotta is a Swiss professional ice hockey club and a member of the National League (NL). The club was founded September 19, 1937, and is also known as "Bianco-Blu" (English: white and blues). Though they have never won the league championship, the club has not been relegated to the Swiss League since being promoted in 1985, the same year that saw the arrival of Dale McCourt. Lago Ritom
__NOTOC__ Lago Ritom is a lake in the Piora valley, Ticino, Switzerland. The natural lake is used as a reservoir by the Swiss Federal Railways ( SBB-CFF-FFS) to generate hydro-electric power for the Gotthard line. The first dam was built in 1918 and, in 1950, its height was increased by 23 m. Overview The lake's surface area is 1.49 km² at an elevation of 1850 m. With Lake Cadagno and Lago di Tom, it is one of the main lakes in the Piora valley. Before being used as a reservoir, Lake Ritom was a meromictic lake similar to the nearby Lake Cadagno. Transport The lake can be reached by funicular from Piotta 786 m below. Ritom Funicular
The Ritom funicular () is a funicular railway in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. It links a lower terminus at Piotta, in the valley of the Ticino River near the southern portal of the Gotthard Tunnel, with an upper terminus at Piora, a walk from Ritom Lake. There is also an intermediate stop at Altanca. History The Ritom Lake is in fact a reservoir, constructed in 1917 in order collect the waters of the Saint-Gotthard Massif for a power station at Piotta, in order to produce electricity for the Gotthard railway. The funicular was originally constructed to facilitate the building of the pipeline carrying this water, which it parallels, but was opened for public use in 1921. The line was extensively rebuilt in 1977/8, and the original car was replaced by a new one in 1985. The original car, replaced in 1985, is displayed at the lower station.
