Pioneer Bowl (1971–1982)
The Pioneer Bowl was an annual college football postseason game held at Memorial Stadium (Wichita Falls), Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls, Texas, from 1971 through 1978 and again in 1981 and 1982. The game originated as an NCAA College Division regional final, then became a playoff game for NCAA Division II Football Championship, Division II and NCAA Division I Football Championship, Division I-AA. History The Pioneer Bowl originated as one of the four NCAA Division II Football Championship#Regional bowls, regional finals of the College Division, before it was subdivided into NCAA Division II, Division II and NCAA Division III, Division III in 1973. Pioneer Bowl (HBCU)
The Pioneer Bowl was an annual American NCAA Division II college football bowl game contested between NCAA Division II teams from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), two athletic conferences traditionally consisting of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Between 1997 and 2012, the game was played 14 times in five different cities in the South. The 1972 Pioneer Bowl was a college football bowl game in Texas, played between the Drake Bulldogs and Tennessee State at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls. The second edition of the Pioneer Bowl, it was one of four regional finals in the College Division played on December 9. The division became Division II (and III) the following season. The 1971 Eastern Michigan Hurons football team represented Eastern Michigan University as an independent during the 1971 NCAA College Division football season. In their fifth season under head coach Dan Boisture, the Hurons compiled a 7–1–2 record and outscored their opponents, 228 to 85. Dave Pureifory was the team captain. The Hurons were undefeated in the regular season, were ranked No. 3 in the NCAA College Division, allowed only one touchdown in the last five games, and advanced to the College Division quarterfinals.
