''Chamaeleon gummifer'', also known as distaff thistle, piney thistle or stemless atractylis, is a thistle in the ''Chamaeleon'' genus. Formerly, it was placed in the '' Atractylis'' genus. It is native to the Mediterranean basin, where it can be found in various habitats, including cultivated- or uncultivated fields and forests. It is a perennial herb producing a stemless, pinkish flower. The plant has a history of use in folk medicine, but it is very toxic due to the presence of atractyloside and carboxyatractyloside. A pinkish inflorescence grows in the center, seen as a capitulum consisting of many small threadlike flowers. The inflorescence is surrounded by spiny bracts. Piney (Pine Barrens Resident)
Piney is a historically derogatory exonym for the inhabitants of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, but it is now also sometimes used as an endonym by them, humorously or otherwise. The Pine Barrens have sandy, acidic soil considered unsuitable for traditional farming by early settlers, who called the land "barren". The area is forested mainly with pitch pine and scrub oak. Many areas are swampy with cedar forests that grow along brownish-red, fresh water called "cedar water." The red color is actually created by the high level of iron in the water. Living conditions in the "Barrens" were considered inhospitable, and those that lived there were considered to be the dregs of society: fugitives, poachers, moonshiners, runaway slaves or deserting soldiers. Often poor, pineys were forced to make a living in any way possible. They collected and sold sphagnum moss or pine cones, hunted, fished, and lived off of the land. Some of the pineys included notorious bandits known as the Pine Ro ...

Piney Gir
Piney Gir (pronounced "gear"), often shortened to Piney, is an American musician and singer, born in Kansas but based in London, England since 1998. She has released seven studio albums. Piney's musical style is predominately edgy Indie pop, indie-pop, although she has been described both as a musical "chameleon" and as "the indie Dolly Parton" and "Transatlantic Pop Guru". Piney was raised in the Bible Belt (United States), Bible Belt of Midwest America and was sheltered from most secular music and culture growing up. She took piano lessons from the age of four and sang every week in church. As a teenager, Piney rebelled against this upbringing embracing all types of music, which may later explain her ability to write and create all genres of music. She then went to University of Missouri–Kansas City, UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance where she majored in music, firstly playing drums and pitched percussion, but then changing her major to voice. When she moved to Lond ...
