The City of Kalamunda is a local government area in the eastern metropolitan region of the Western Australian capital city of Perth about east of Perth's central business district. The area covers , much of which is state forest rising into the Darling Scarp to the east. In the mid 2010s, the area had a population of 57 thousand people. History The Darling Range Road District was gazetted on 30 April 1897. On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire of Kalamunda after the enactment of the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. Darling Range is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is based to the east and south-east of Perth. Geography Darling Range is situated in the outer east and south-east of Perth. It is a mixture of suburbia and hinterland, falling inside the Metropolitan Region Scheme and running along most of its southern and eastern boundary. The district covers all of the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale as well as the less urbanised parts of the city of Armadale. History Darling Range was first created for the 1950 state election. Gooseberry Hill, Western Australia
Gooseberry Hill is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Kalamunda. It is the site of Gooseberry Hill National Park. It is located at the highest point south of the departure of the Helena River from the Darling Scarp on to the Swan Coastal Plain. It is often associated with the railway formation of the Kalamunda Zig Zag and the northernmost high feature of Statham's Quarry, which lie on the north west of the locality within national park land. In 1861, Benjamin Robins purchased of land in the area. In 1878 surveyor Henry Samuel Ranford recorded the name of the eponymous hill as "Gooseberry Hill" ; that name, derived from the presence of cape gooseberries in the area, referred to the Kalamunda area generally in the late 19th century. Kalamunda ( nys, Karlamarda) is a town and eastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located in the Darling Scarp at the eastern limits of the Perth metropolitan area. History Indigenous Noongar people were the first inhabitants of the area. The first permanent European settlers were the family of Frederick and Elizabeth Stirk, who arrived in 1881 and established a property called Headingly Hill at what is now Stirk Park; their house, Stirk Cottage, is now a museum. Bickley is a suburb located within the City of Kalamunda, in Perth, Western Australia. It is situated on the Darling Scarp and is known for the brook of the same name. Before 1949 it was a stopping place on the Upper Darling Range Railway. It was originally known as "Heidelburg" or "Heidelberg", but during World War I, Western Australian Government Railways and Tramways renamed it "Bickley" after a local pioneer Wallace Bickley. It has been the site of holiday and other sorts of camps. The Seven Network and Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Perth television transmission towers have been located there since the founding of television in Perth in 1959. Guildford is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, 12 km northeast of the city centre within the City of Swan. Guildford was founded in 1829 as one of the earliest settlements of the Swan River Colony. It is one of only three towns in the metropolitan area listed on the Register of the National Trust.
