Piedade, Goa
Piedade is an island village located in Ilhas (also known as Tiswadi), a northern district in the state of Goa, India, and named after Our Lady of Compassion. The name comes from the Portuguese word , which means "compassion". It lies 23 km east of the state capital, Panjim, between the taluks of Satari (to the north) and Ponda (to the south). Other nearby villages are Amona (3 km), Volvoi (3 km), Surla (4 km), Cudnem (4 km), Betqui, and Candola (5 km). The local language is Konkani. Panchayati raj (council of five officials) is the political system, system of local government in India, local self-government of Village#South Asia, villages in rural India as opposed to urban and suburban municipal governance in India, municipalities. It consists of the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) through which the self-government of villages is realized. They are tasked with "economic development, strengthening social justice and implementation of Central and State Government Schemes including those 29 subjects listed in the Eleventh Schedule." Divar
The island of Divar (formerly ''Piedade'') (, pronounced ) (derived from the word ''Dipavati'' or 'small Island' in Konkani) lies in the Mandovi river in the Indian state of Goa. It is one of six major islands within the Mandovi, the others being: * Ilha de Goa, * Chorão, * Vanxim, * Cumbarjua, * St Estevam and * Several other small mangrove islands and sand banks. Location It is located approximately upriver from Panjim. The island is dis-connected from Old Goa on the south-east side, Ribandar, on the south-west side and Naroa on the north side, all by ferry. A launch also connects Divar to the city of Panjim from further north-west, in the island-village of Vanxim. The Konkan Railway passes through the village and the nearest stop to the village is the train station at Carambolim. São Matias, Goa
São Mathias also known as Malar is a village on Divar Island, Tiswadi or Ilhas, in the Indian state of Goa. The island is located 10 km upriver from Panjim. A ferry connects São Mathias to the island village of Vanxim; also part of the São Mathias Panchayati raj, Panchayat. The Konkan Railway passes through São Mathias, the nearest stop on the mainland is the train station at Carambolim.
