Picture This (Channel 4)
''Picture This'' is a cross-platform project from Channel 4, London about photography, in collaboration with independent TV producers Renegade Pictures and Flickr, the photo sharing website. ''Picture This'' comprises a short reality television series following the progress of six up and coming photographers as they are guided by a group of established photographers and gallery owners, and a website (www.channel4.com/picturethis) which is designed to help people improve their photography in a friendly, constructive environment. The TV show takes the form of a constructive competition judged by photographer Martin Parr of the Magnum Photos photo agency, Brett Rogers of the Photographers' Gallery and Alexander Proud, Alex Proud of Proud Galleries. Martin Parr
Martin Parr (born 23 May 1952) is a British documentary photographer, photojournalist and photobook collector. He is known for his photographic projects that take an intimate, satirical and anthropological look at aspects of modern life, in particular documenting the social classes of England, and more broadly the wealth of the Western world. His major projects have been rural communities (1975–1982), ''The Last Resort'' (1983–1985), ''The Cost of Living'' (1987–1989), ''Small World'' (1987–1994) and ''Common Sense'' (1995–1999). Since 1994, Parr has been a member of Magnum Photos. He has had around 40 solo photobooks published, and has featured in around 80 exhibitions worldwide – including the international touring exhibition ''ParrWorld'', and a retrospective at the Barbican Arts Centre, London, in 2002. Alexander Proud
Alexander 'Alex' Proud is a British entrepreneur. He was born in Brighton, on 14 September 1969 and educated at Tonbridge School and then the University of York, where he studied Politics. In 1998 he founded Proud Gallery, in London, which has since grown into the Proud Group. In 2020, Proud was accused of bullying and inappropriate behaviour by five female staff members. Alex Proud has also been accused multiple times of owing thousands of pounds worth of debt to people that worked for him in various venues , as well as liquidating companies multiple times in order to not pay any of the people or business involved. As of 2020, he owes £275,000 to HMRC, £95,012 to Westminster City Council and £19,049 to the City of London Corporation, while a document from 2013 states that almost £2 million was owed to a list of 134 organisations and businesses. Flickr ( ) is an image hosting service, image and Online video platform, video hosting service, as well as an online community, founded in Canada and headquartered in the United States. It was created by Ludicorp in 2004 and was previously a common way for amateur and professional photographers to host high-resolution photos. It has changed ownership several times and has been owned by SmugMug since April 20, 2018. Flickr had a total of 112 million registered members and more than 3.5 million new images uploaded daily. On August 5, 2011, the site reported that it was hosting more than 6 billion images. In 2024, it was reported as having shared 10 billion photos and accepting 25 million per day. Magnum Photos
Magnum Photos is an international photographic cooperative owned by its photographer-members, with offices in Paris, New York City, London and Tokyo. The Photographers' Gallery was founded in London by Sue Davies opening on 14 January 1971, as the first public gallery in the United Kingdom devoted solely to photography. It is also home to the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, established in 1996 to identify and reward photographic talent and innovation, and the Bar-Tur Photobook Award. Jan Younghusband
Jan Younghusband is a producer, administrator and consultant working in film, theatre, television and music. Early life and education Younghusband grew up in Portsmouth and studied music at Royal Holloway, University of London, Royal Holloway. Career Younghusband's first job was in the office of the BBC Proms at age 17. Baltic Centre For Contemporary Art
Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (also known simply as (the) Baltic, stylised as BALTIC) is a centre for contemporary art located on the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. It hosts a frequently changing variety of exhibitions, events, and educational programmes with no permanent exhibition. The idea to open a centre for contemporary arts in Gateshead was developed in the 1990s, which was a time of regeneration for the local area—the Sage and Gateshead Millennium Bridge was also being conceived of in this period.
