Philippe Gustave Le Doulcet, Comte De Pontécoulant
Philippe Gustave Doulcet, Comte de Pontécoulant (1795–1874) was a French astronomer. He was the younger son of Louis Gustave le Doulcet, Comte de Pontécoulant and was the brother of Louis-Adolphe Pontécoulant. After 1811 he served in the army until 1849. Following his retirement he dedicated himself to the study of mathematics and astronomy. In 1829 he used the mathematical methods of Poisson and Lagrange to successfully predict the return of Halley's Comet with good precision. His prediction of the perihelion passage was correct to within two days.George Forbes, "History of Astronomy". He was a member of the French Academy of Sciences. Pontécoulant () is a commune in the Calvados department in the Normandy region in northwestern France. Geography The commune is part of the area known as Suisse Normande. The commune is made up of the following collection of villages and hamlets, Launay and Pontécoulant. The Commune along with another nine communes shares part of a 5,729 hectare, Natura 2000 conservation area, called the Bassin de la Druance. The communes single watercourse is the River, La Druance. Pontécoulant (crater)
Pontécoulant is a prominent lunar impact crater that is located in the southeastern part of the Moon. Due to its position, the crater appears foreshortened from the Earth and it is difficult to observe much detail. Nearby craters include Hanno just to the northeast, and the comparably sized Helmholtz due south. This crater has terraced inner wall that is nearly circular, but with an outward extension to the southeast. The rim is somewhat worn but retains much detail. The crater partly overlies the older and smaller Pontécoulant E along the southern rim, and has several tiny craterlets on the eastern inner wall and one to the southwest. The inner floor is nearly flat, with some rough ground near the southern rim and some low central peaks located southwest of the midpoint.
