Phil Riker
Philip Riker III (born September 16, 1946) is an American former competition swimmer for the University of North Carolina, and a 1964 U.S. Olympic competitor in the 200-meter butterfly. Early education and swimming A native of Paterson, New Jersey, Riker learned to swim around the age of three, and soon began attending meets in AAU competition. He started as a freestyler, then competed in backstroke and by thirteen began to compete in his signature stroke, the butterfly. Some of his early swimming took place at the Paterson YMCA. By 14, he was an age group national champion in the 100-meter butterfly. Riker swam for Paterson's Eastside High School, where he served as captain. During his high school years, he received instruction by Hall of Fame Rutgers Coach Frank Elm, another native of Paterson, who had coached at the Paterson YMCA. Butterfly Stroke
The butterfly (shortened to fly) is a List of swimming styles, swimming stroke swum on the chest, with both arms moving symmetrically, accompanied by the butterfly kick (also known as the "dolphin kick") along with the movement of the hips and chest. It is the newest swimming (sport), swimming style swum in competition, first swum in the early 1930s and originating out of the breaststroke. Speed and ergonomics The butterfly stroke boasts a higher peak velocity than the front crawl, owing to the synchronous propulsion generated by the simultaneous pull/push of both arms and legs. However, due to the pronounced drop in speed during the recovery phase, it is marginally slower than the front crawl, especially over extended distances. Jed Graef
Jed Richard Graef (born May 1, 1942) is an American former competition swimmer, for Princeton University, a 1964 Tokyo Olympic gold medalist in the 200-meter backstroke, and former world record-holder. After obtaining a Doctorate in Psychology from the University of Michigan, he taught for seven years at Toronto University, before moving to Rochester, New York, where he worked as a programmer and treasurer for the Rochester Zen Center, where he met his wife, Sunyata, an ordained Buddhist priest. After a move to Vermont in the late 1980's, he would continue to work as a programmer, serve on the Shelbourne School Board, and act as treasurer for the Vermont Zen Center in Shelbourne, founded by his wife in 1988.
