List Of Largest Insects
Insects, which are a type of arthropod, are the most numerous group of multicellular organisms on the planet, with over a million species identified so far. The title of heaviest insect in the world has many contenders, the most frequently crowned of which is the larval stage of the goliath beetle, '' Goliathus goliatus'', the maximum size of which is at least and . The highest confirmed weight of an adult insect is for a giant weta, '' Deinacrida heteracantha'', although it is likely one of the elephant beetles, '' Megasoma elephas'' and '' Megasoma actaeon'', or goliath beetles, both of which can commonly exceed and , can reach a greater weight. The longest insects are the stick insects, see below. Representatives of the extinct dragonfly-like order Meganisoptera (also known as griffinflies) such as the Carboniferous '' Meganeura monyi'' and the Permian '' Meganeuropsis permiana'' are the largest insect species ever known. These creatures had a wingspan of some . Their m ...

Phryganistria
''Phryganistria'' is a genus of stick insects belonging to the subfamily Clitumninae. It was described by the Swedish entomologist Carl Stål in 1875. Members of the genus are found only in Southeast Asia. Of the new species described in 2014, ''Phryganistria heusii yentuensis'', which is 32 cm long, is one of the longest insects known to date. Another, '' Phryganistria tamdaoensis'' was selected in 2015 by the International Institute for Species Exploration as one of the "Top 10 New Species" for new species discovered in 2014. In May 2016, the Chinese state media Xinhua announced that a new species informally named 'Phryganistria chinensis' was discovered in Liuzhou, Guangxi autonomous region of China. The discoverer Zhao Li, at the Insect Museum of West China, had found the specimen in 2014. The original specimen was a female and measured long. It has not been formally described. In August 2017, one of the offspring attained 64 cm (25.2 inch) in length, becoming the lar ...

Phasmatidae
The Phasmatidae are a family of the stick insects (order Phasmatodea). They belong to the superfamily Anareolatae of suborder Verophasmatodea. Like many of their relatives, the Phasmatidae are capable of regenerating limbs and commonly reproduce by parthenogenesis. Despite their bizarre, even threatening appearance, they are harmless to humans. The Phasmatidae contain some of the largest insects in existence. An undescribed species of '' Phryganistria'' is the longest living insect known, able to reach a total length of 64 cm (25.2 inch). Subfamilies Following the Phasmid Study Group, nine subfamilies are recognized in the Phasmatidae. Other treatments differ, sometimes recognizing as few as six. The Lonchodinae were historically often placed in the Diapheromeridae, the other family of the Anareolatae. The Phasmatinae are often expanded to include the two tribes here separated as the Clitumninae, while the Extatosomatinae may be similarly included in the Tropidoderinae ...

Tribe (biology)
In biology, a tribe is a taxonomic rank above genus, but below family (biology), family and subfamily. It is sometimes subdivided into subtribes. By convention, all taxonomic ranks from genus upwards are capitalized, including both tribe and subtribe. In zoology, the standard ending for the name of a zoological tribe is "-ini". Examples include the tribes Goat-antelope#Tribe Caprini, Caprini (goat-antelopes), Hominini (hominins), Bombini (bumblebees), and Thunnini (tunas). The tribe Hominini is divided into subtribes by some scientists; subtribe Hominina then comprises "humans". The standard ending for the name of a zoological subtribe is "-ina". In botany, the standard ending for the name of a botanical tribe is "-eae". Examples include the tribes Acalypheae and Scilloideae#Hyacintheae, Hyacintheae. The tribe Hyacintheae is divided into subtribes, including the subtribe Massoniinae. The standard ending for the name of a botanical subtribe is "-inae". In bacteriology, the form ...

Stick Insect
The Phasmatodea (also known as Phasmida, Phasmatoptera or Spectra) are an order of insects whose members are variously known as stick insects, stick-bugs, walking sticks, stick animals, or bug sticks. They are also occasionally referred to as Devil's darning needles, although this name is shared by both dragonflies and crane flies. They can be generally referred to as phasmatodeans, phasmids, or ghost insects, with phasmids in the family Phylliidae called leaf insects, leaf-bugs, walking leaves, or bug leaves. The group's name is derived from the Ancient Greek ', meaning an apparition or phantom, referring to their resemblance to vegetation while in fact being animals. Their natural camouflage makes them difficult for predators to detect; still, many species have one of several secondary lines of defense in the form of startle displays, spines or toxic secretions. Stick insects from the genera '' Phryganistria'', '' Ctenomorpha'', and '' Phobaeticus'' include the world's l ...
