Peterborough—Kawartha
Peterborough (formerly Peterborough—Kawartha) is a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1953. From 2015 to 2025, the riding was known as Peterborough—Kawartha. Geography It now consists of the City of Peterborough and the municipalities of: Douro-Dummer, Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, Selwyn, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Asphodel-Norwood and Hiawatha First Nation plus the Curve Lake First Nation. History The riding's borders have differed slightly since its creation in 1953, but has always included most or all of Peterborough County and its county seat of Peterborough, Ontario. Prior to 1952, Peterborough was split into two ridings, one of which was sometimes partly joined to neighbouring Hastings County. Selwyn is a township (Canada), township in central-eastern Ontario, Canada, located in Peterborough County. The township comprises a mix of rural areas and built up urban areas (former independent towns and villages). The township was created in 2001, as Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield, changing its name to Selwyn effective January 15, 2013. It is not to be confused with the Hamlet (place), hamlet of Selwyn, one of many unincorporated areas within the township. Douro-Dummer
Douro-Dummer is a township in central-eastern Ontario, Canada, in Peterborough County along the Trent-Severn Waterway. It was formed on January 1, 1998, through the amalgamation of Douro and Dummer Townships. The township is the site of drumlins known as the ''Drumlins of Douro'', and home of the Warsaw Caves (near the community of Warsaw). Douro's general store was run by the same family since 1896, Patrick George Towns after moving the store opened in his hometown Peterborough in 1892; however, it closed its doors for the last time in Sunday, September 4, 2016. Havelock-Belmont-Methuen is a Township (Canada), township in central-eastern Ontario, Canada, in Peterborough County. On January 1, 1998, Belmont and Methuen Township amalgamated with the Village of Havelock to form what is now Havelock-Belmont-Methuen. History The region's colonial history began with an influx of settlers after Belmont and Methuen Township was surveyed in 1823. The community of Havelock was incorporated as an independent village in 1892. Havelock was named after the United Kingdom, British general, Sir Henry Havelock. Early settlers built their homes in an area of dense forests and numerous lakes and rivers within the rocky Canadian Shield. They survived by means of fishing, logging, and farming. Trent Lakes
The Municipality of Trent Lakes is a lower-tier township (Canada), township in the rural, mostly wooded northern section of Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada. The municipality has a primarily cottage and tourist industry based economy but has grown year round residency due to its commute distance to the Greater Toronto Area. In 1998 the Township of Galway-Cavendish and the Township of Harvey were amalgamated by Minister's Order to become Galway-Cavendish and Harvey. The Municipality of Trent Lakes adopted its new name by By-law B2013-017 on February 19, 2013. Peterborough West
Peterborough West was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1953. It was located in the province of Ontario. It was created by the British North America Act 1867 which divided the County of Peterborough was into two ridings. The West Riding consisted of the Townships of South Monaghan (in the County of Northumberland), North Monaghan, Smith, and Ennismore, and the Town of Peterborough. In 1903, the townships of Cavendish, Galway, Harvey, and the village of Ashburnham were added to the riding. In 1914, the village of Ashburnham was excluded. In 1924, Peterborough West was defined to consist of the part of the county of Peterborough included in the townships of Galway, Cavendish, Harvey, Ennismore, Smith, Douro, Otanabee and North Monaghan, and that part of the county of Northumberland included in the township of South Monaghan, together with the city of Peterborough. The 1953 Canadian federal election was held on August 10, 1953, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 22nd Parliament of Canada. Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent led his Liberal Party of Canada to its second consecutive majority government, although the party lost seats to the other parties. The Progressive Conservative Party, led by former Premier of Ontario, George Drew, formed the official opposition, but for the last time until 1993, the party was unable to win the popular vote in any of Canada's provinces or territories. This was the last election until 1988 in which any party won back-to-back majorities, and the last until 1997 in which the Liberals would accomplish this feat. The 1963 Canadian federal election was held on April 8, 1963, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 26th Parliament of Canada.
