Peter Charles Burns (5 January 1866 – 11 October 1952) was an Australian rules footballer in the (then) Victorian Football Association (VFA) and Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of John Burns (1829–1897), and Martha Burns (1833–1914), née Harrison, Peter Charles Burns was born at Steiglitz, Victoria, on 5 January 1866. One of his brothers, Allen Burns, played for South Melbourne in the VFL. Peter Burns married Elizabeth Corbett (1867–1951) in South Melbourne on 18 April 1889. Football Burns was a tall ruckman and full-back who made his debut in 1881, aged 16 years, with Ballarat Imperial Football Club, Ballarat Imperials before transferring to powerful VFA club Sydney Swans, South Melbourne in 1885. Ballarat Imperial Football Club
The Ballarat Imperial Football Club was an Australian rules football club that competed in the Ballarat Football League (BFL). The club was one of the most successful teams in the league, winning 17 premierships before it was dissolved in 1955. History The club was formed in the mid-1870s as the "Galatea Football Club" before becoming known as "Ballarat Imperial" in 1878 with the first practice match taking place on Saturday 4th May 1878. In 1882, Ballarat Imperial FC and City FC agreed to merge clubs and become known as the Ballarat City Imperial FC and retain the colours of Ballarat Imperial FC. Steiglitz, Victoria
Steiglitz is a locality in the Brisbane Ranges in Victoria. It is located west of the state capital, Melbourne, Australia. At the , the Steiglitz area had a population of 61. History The von Stieglitz family bought and settled the land on which Steiglitz now sits in 1835. They returned to Ireland in 1853, but retained ownership of the land, upon which gold was found the following year; it became the first auriferous quartz-mining site in Victoria. A settlement of gold-prospectors quickly developed, and took its (misspelled) name from the land's owners. The population reached 2000 by 1863, including roughly 220 Chinese immigrants. The easily-won gold had been worked out by the late 1870s, and many people moved away. The last gold mine closed in 1941 and, as of 2015, the population of the town site was just eight. Bill Proudfoot
William Henry Proudfoot (11 June 1868 – 11 January 1931) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in both the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of James Proudfoot (1818–1902), and Isabella Proudfoot (1829–1904), née McLean, William Henry Proudfoot was born at Kilmore, Victoria on 11 June 1868. He married Evelyn Crewther (1875-1944), in Kyneton, Victoria on 3 October 1900. They had one child, a son, Stanley Gordon Proudfoot (1901-1936). Mick Pleass
George Victor "Mick" Pleass (12 November 1874 – 27 August 1925) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne and Essendon in the VFA and Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Pleass was a follower and played his early football at South Melbourne when they were in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). He participated in their inaugural VFL match and remained with the club until 1904 when he crossed to Essendon, after his transfer to play for Boulder in the Western Australian Goldfields was refused. During his career he represented Victoria at interstate football on three occasions. Charlie Colgan
Charles Edward Colgan (9 February 1878 – 25 July 1935) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The youngest of the seven children of the tailor Patrick Colgan (1833–1911), and Margaret Colgan, née Dwyer (1841–1911), Charles Edward Colgan was born at Emerald Hill (now known as South Melbourne) on 9 February 1878. Eddy James
Edwin Ernest James (14 February 1874 – 16 September 1937) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong in the years before and following the formation of the VFL. Football James started his career as a backman, playing a game at 15 after Geelong were short for players. He moved to the forward line in his return in 1892, and in 1895 finished with 24 goals to be equal third in the VFA goalkicking. In the inaugural VFL season in 1897, he kicked 22 goals in the home-and-away season to share the Leading Goalkicker Award with Jack Leith; incidentally, this is the lowest number of goals to have ever earned this award, and will likely hold this record in perpetuity due to the high-scoring nature of the modern game. Bill Jackson (Australian Footballer)
Bill 'Newhaven' Jackson (13 April 1874 – 11 September 1921) was an Australian cyclist and an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Jackson, who was nicknamed after a Melbourne Cup winning horse, came to Essendon from Ballarat Imperials. He played as a follower in the 1898 VFL Grand Final loss to Fitzroy but was also used as a forward during his career. Jackson injured his knee early in Essendon's 1900 semi final encounter with Melbourne and retired. Herbert Howson (11 August 1872 – 8 May 1948) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in both the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Harry Josiah Howson (1849-1923), and Margaritta Armstrong Howson (1848-1922), née Firman, Herbert Howson, widely known as "Bert", was born at Newstead, Victoria on 11 August 1872. Edward Patrick Drohan (17 July 1876 – 28 July 1938) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club and Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) before becoming an umpire and a coach.
