Perlan Project
Perlan Project Inc. is a not-for-profit aeronautical exploration and atmospheric science research organization that utilizes Glider (sailplane), sailplanes (gliders) designed to fly at extremely high altitudes. On 29 August 2006 Steve Fossett and Einar Enevoldson, the pilots of Perlan Mission I, broke the existing altitude record for gliders by soaring up to 50,671 feet (15,460m) in a standard glider using stratospheric waves of air. The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale has ratified the altitude record of achieved on 2 September 2018, a substantial improvement over the previous year's best altitude of , which was set on 3 September 2017. These flights used the custom designed and built pressurized high-altitude Windward Performance Perlan II glider, sponsored by Airbus. Einar Enevoldson
Einar K. Enevoldson (June 15, 1932, in Seattle, WashingtonApril 14, 2021) was the director of the Perlan Project. He was a civilian research pilot for NASA's Hugh L. Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, California, from 1968 until 1986. He was involved in many research programs, including those with experimental wings, propulsion and digital computer flight control systems. Career Enevoldson attended several colleges. He received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and his M.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Wyoming in 1963. He was a jet fighter pilot in the United States Air Force, and as an exchange officer with the Royal Air Force attended the Empire Test Pilot's School in Farnborough, Hampshire, England. Wolfram Kurt Erhard Hirth (28 February 1900 – 25 July 1959) was a German gliding pioneer and sailplane designer. A polar vortex, more formally a circumpolar vortex, is a large region of cold, rotating air; polar vortices encircle both of Earth's polar regions. Polar vortices also exist on other rotating, low-obliquity planetary bodies.
