North Goa
North Goa district is one of the two districts that constitutes the state of Goa, India. The district has an area of , and is bounded by Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra state to the north and by Belgavi district of Karnataka to the east, by South Goa district to the south, and by the Arabian Sea to the west. ''Bardez'' or ''Bardes'' ( IPA: ) is a ''taluka'' of the North Goa district in the Indian state of Goa. Etymology The name is credited to the Saraswat Brahmin immigrants who emigrated to the Konkan via Magadha plains in northern India. Bardez, or more properly ''bara'' (twelve) ''desh'' (country), means "twelve countries" (or territories). Panaji (; , , )also known as Panjim, is the capital of the Indian state of Goa and the headquarters of North Goa district. Previously, it was the territorial capital of the former Portuguese India. It lies on the banks of the Mandovi river estuary in the Tiswadi sub-district (''taluka''). Our Lady of Peñafrancia () is an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A Marian image is permanently enshrined in the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Peñafrancia in Naga, Camarines Sur. Spain The devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia originates from the province of Salamanca, Spain. In the 1400s, Simón Vela, who came from a rich family, gave up his inheritance to become a laybrother of a Franciscan convent in Paris. He journeyed to the mountains of Peña de Francia, which means "Rock of France," in Salamanca after hearing a voice instructing him to look for a sacred image of Mary; this is where the title "Peñafrancia" came from. The statue had been hidden with other images and church bells to prevent them from falling into the hands of Moors/Saracens. Vimala Devi
Teresa da Piedade de Baptista Almeida (born ), known by her pen name Vimala Devi, is a Portuguese writer, poet, and translator. Born into an elite Goan caste of Roman Catholic Brahmins in Portuguese Goa, she settled in Lisbon, Portugal in 1957, later working as a translator, during which she adopted her pen name. In Portugal, she met her future husband, Manuel de Seabra, a fellow journalist and writer.
