Pencoed (also Pen-coed); ) is a town and community in the county borough of Bridgend, Wales. It straddles the M4 motorway north east of Bridgend and is situated on the Ewenny River. At the 2011 census it had a population of around 9,166. Etymology and pronunciation The name appears as "Penkoyt" in a 1303 deed of Ewenny Priory and as "Pencoyd" in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. The name is likely a contraction of ''pen-y-coed'' (head/top/end of the forest/wood) and has historically been given as both Pen-coed and Pencoed. While some local business, roads and signage use the hyphenated version, the official spelling in both English and Welsh is "Pencoed". The standard pronunciation in modern Welsh is or . However, the diphthong 'oe' in a monosyllable is generally reduced to a long vowel 'o' :in South Wales, so the local pronunciation is . Penprysg
Penprysg is a residential area of the town of Pencoed in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. Located in the northern suburban district of Pencoed, it occupies a saddle where the town rises onto the sandstone ridge of Cefn Hirgoed, which extends about 5 km eastward from Kenfig Hill and reaches a height of 142 m on its central spine. The area evolved from ribbon development along Penprysg Road in the late nineteenth century and has since expanded through housing initiatives in the 1970s and post-2000 infill development, with the ward of Pencoed and Penprysg recording just over 10,000 residents in the 2021 Census. Governance Penprysg is a community ward to Pencoed Town Council. Pencoed RFC
Pencoed Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team based in Pencoed. Today, Pencoed RFC plays in the Welsh Rugby Union, Division Two West League and is a feeder club for the Ospreys. The team badge consists of a shield containing the lamb of god carrying a St George's standard. The shield is topped by the Prince of Wales three feathers. Pencoed RFC was established in 1888 with the clubhouse situated on the eastern edge of Felindre Rd. In 1980 the Mini & Junior section was formed. Pencoed Railway Station
Pencoed railway station is a minor station in Pencoed, Bridgend County Borough, south Wales. The station is located at street level at The Square in Pencoed. It is a stop on the South Wales Main Line, served by trains on the Maesteg Line, and occasionally by Swanline Cardiff to Swansea regional services, as well as the peak time Manchester to Carmarthen service. All trains are operated by Transport for Wales Rail. Ewenny River
The Ewenny River () is a river in South Wales. For most of its length, it forms the border between the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend. It is a major tributary of the River Ogmore, which it joins near its estuary. Course The river rises to the north east of Bridgend town, in South Wales, where two minor rivers known as Ewenny Fach and Ewenny Fawr join. Ewenny Fach is considered a tributary of the Ewenny Fawr, which in turn is formed when three streams, Nant Canna, Nant Ciwc and Nant Crymlyn join. This branch of the river flows southeast, past the village of Pencoed and under the M4 Motorway until it is joined by the Ewenny Fach south of Junction 35 of the road . Cefn Hirgoed is a ridge in Bridgend county borough in South Wales. The ridge extends for about 5 km east from the village of Sarn just north of Bridgend to Pen-prysg north of Pencoed. At the point where it reaches its highest elevation of 142m, are a couple of covered reservoirs. Towards the west the M4 motorway runs along the hill’s southern edge. Geology The hill is formed from relatively hard-wearing sandstones of the South Wales Lower Coal Measures with mudstone layers between the sandstones which here dip steeply northwards into the South Wales Coalfield syncline. The M4, originally the London-South Wales Motorway, is the third longest motorway in the United Kingdom, running from west London to southwest Wales.
