Pelan is an abandoned townsite in Kittson County, Minnesota, United States. It lies in Pelan Township, between the cities of Karlstad and Greenbush. History Settlement began in 1880. The site was named for Charles Pelan, a wealthy Englishman. The town had a post office from 1888 until 1912. In 1889 the first postmaster, Frederic W. (Billy) Clay, disappeared with a sack of mail and was never found. The town was incorporated in 1903 but ceased in 1909. Kittson County is a county in the northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Minnesota along the Canada–US border, south of the Canadian province of Manitoba. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,207. Its county seat is Hallock. History Evidence of occupation dating back 1800 years has been confirmed through archaeological expeditions done in the 1930s and 1970s around the burial mounds on the sand ridges in the eastern part of the county, which date to the Woodland Period. Evidence has been found that the Laurel, Arvilla, St. Croix, and Blackduck complexes were the area's early occupants. Pelan Township is a township in Kittson County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 61 at the 2000 census. Pelan Township was organized in 1900, and named for Charles H. Pelan, an early settler. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.6 square miles (92.3 km), all land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 61 people, 25 households, and 19 families residing in the township. The population density was 1.7 people per square mile (0.7/km). U.S. Route 59 and Minnesota State Highway 11 are two of the main arterial routes in the city. The city's slogan is "The Moose Capital of the North". History A post office called Karlstad has been in operation since 1905. The city was named after Karlstad, Sweden. Greenbush is a city in Roseau County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 719 at the 2010 census. Minnesota State Highways 11 and 32 are two of the main arterial routes in the community. History The word Greenbush comes from "Sha Ach Wah," which means spruce tree or green bush in Ojibwe. Scandinavian, Polish and Bohemian settlers arrived in the area in 1880s, with the largest influx immigrating in the early 1890s. The Homestead Act gave free to settlers if they set up living quarters and developed a few acres into the fields. The original setting of the city was on a ridge of what was formerly known to be the shores of ancient Lake Agassiz. The western wood pewee (''Contopus sordidulus'') is a small tyrant flycatcher. Adults are gray-olive on the upperparts with light underparts, washed with olive on the breast. They have two wing bars and a dark bill with yellow at the base of the lower mandible.
