Rebecca (Becca) Peixotto is an American archaeologist who is best known for her contribution to the Rising Star Expedition as one of the six Underground Astronauts, a group of scientists tasked with excavating the Rising Star Cave System. She has also participated in the Great Dismal Swamp Landscape Study and is an experienced wilderness educator. Education Peixotto received her Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology Specialization, in 2017 from American University with her dissertation ''Against the Map: Resistance Landscapes of the Great Dismal Swamp''. Peixotto obtained a B.A. in Slavic Area Studies and Mathematics from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She pursued further studies abroad at the University of Amsterdam, obtaining an M.A. in Discourse and Argumentation Studies. Daniel Levy Maduro Peixotto (July 18, 1800 – May 13, 1843) was a Dutch-born Jewish-American physician. Life Peixotto was born on July 18, 1800, in Amsterdam, Holland, the son of Moses Levy Maduro Peixotto and Judith Lopez Salzedo. He studied in Curaçao under Professor Strebeck. His father was a merchant in Curaçao who later became rabbi of Congregation Shearith Israel in New York City following the death of Gershom Mendes Seixas. Peixotto immigrated to America with his father in 1807 and settled in New York City. He graduated from Columbia College in 1816. He then studied at Columbia University, graduating from there with an M.D. in 1819 and an M.A. in 1825. Before he got his medical degree, he studied medicine in the office of Dr. David Hosack. He spent several years practicing medicine in the West Indies after graduating, returning to New York in 1823. Ernest Clifford Peixotto (1869–1940) was an American artist, illustrator, and author. Although he was known mainly for his murals and his travel literature, his artwork also regularly appeared in ''Scribner's Magazine''. His 1916 work ''Our Hispanic Southwest'' is famous for including the first written appearance of the ethnic slur "spic" (although, in fact, it had previously appeared with a different spelling and pronunciation). Grace Peixotto
Grace Peixotto (October 30, 1817 – May 1, 1880) was an American brothel owner. She owned the "Big Brick" in Charleston, South Carolina. Personal life Grace Peixotto was born on October 30, 1817, on the island of St. Thomas. She was the daughter of Reverend Solomon Cohen Peixotto and Rachel Suares. She was the fifth of nine children. Her family emigrated from St. Thomas to South Carolina in 1818. Her older siblings were born in Curaçao, and her younger siblings in Charleston, South Carolina. Her father officiated as the hazan in both St. Thomas and Charleston. His congregation in Charleston was Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, where he succeeded Hartwig Cohen, and served from 1823 to 1835.
