Pawling is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. Its population was 8,012 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Catherine Pauling, the daughter of Henry Beekman, who held the second largest land patent in the county. The town is in the southeastern part of the county, and contains a village of the same name. History A part of the town was involved in a boundary problem involving New York and Connecticut. A section of the town, located in the "Oblong"—the name was given to the disputed oblong strip of land, two miles in width forming part of the Eastern boundary of the now Dutchess and Putnam Counties—was settled by Nathan Birdsall and his wife Jane Langdon; they were the first pioneer settlers of Quaker Hill, Dutchess, NY. It is part of the Kiryas Joel- Poughkeepsie– Newburgh, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the larger New York– Newark– Bridgeport, NY- NJ- CT- PA Combined Statistical Area. Pawling (Metro-North Station)
Pawling station is a commuter rail stop on the Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line, located in Pawling, New York. History Although the New York & Harlem Railroad traversed the Pawling community as early as the late 1840s, the town did not receive a dedicated passenger station until the construction of one by the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad in 1881. Despite the establishment of a nearby "Wood station" in 1860, the Pawling station became a focal point for the town's development and continued to serve passengers following the village's incorporation in 1893. The station was one of the stops on the Harlem Line for trains such as the ''Berkshire Hills Express'', offering limited-stop service between New York City and destinations in the Berkshires region, including Pittsfield and North Adams, Massachusetts. The Pawling Nature Reserve is located in the northern section of the Pawling (town), New York, Town of Pawling, New York, United States. It is a area located along the top of Hammersby Ridge, near Quaker Lake owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy. Acquired in 1958 from a local citizens' group, it is preserved to protect several diverse communities, including plant and animal species considered rare or threatened species, threatened in New York, such as the Succisa pratensis, devil's bit, soapwort gentian, Asplenium trichomanes, maidenhair spleenwort and some salamander communities. Pawling & Harnischfeger
Henry Harnischfeger (July 10, 1855 – November 15, 1930) was a pioneer in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, mining industry. Early life and career Harnischfeger was born in Salmünster, Kreis Schlüchtern, Hessen-Nassau, on July 10, 1855. He left his homeland in 1872 and came to the United States. He arrived in the U.S. on April 9, and was employed by the Singer Sewing Machine Company, which is now known as the Singer Corporation. He worked there for 9 years, and then came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He then worked for the White Hill Sewing Machine Company, where he managed casting patternmaking and gear machining operations at the Whitehill factory with Alonzo Pawling. They formed a machine and pattern shop on December 1, 1884. to manufacture, assemble and service components and equipment needed by other, larger manufacturing firms in the region.
