Pavol Šajgalík (bishop)
Pavol Šajgalík (born 13 November 1964) a Slovak prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He has served as the ordinary of the Military Ordinariate of Slovakia since 2025. Biography Pavol Šajgalík was born on 13 November 1964 in Bratislava. He was educated at the grammar school in Bratislava and studied electrical engineering at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, graduating in 1988. During his studies, at the age of 22, he joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and, lacking the official content from authorities of Communist Czechoslovakia, he secretly studied theology. After the Velvet Revolution, he studied pastoral theology at the University of Vienna. He made his perpetual vows on 25 March 1993, and was ordained a priest on 15 August 1993. Pavol Šajgalík (born 30 June 1955) is a Slovak physicist, specialized in materials science. He has served as the president of the Slovak Academy of Sciences from 2015 to 2025. Biography Pavol Šajgalík was born on 30 June 1955 in Bratislava. He studied physics at the Comenius University, graduating in 1979. Šajgalík was awarded the candidate degree by the Slovak Academy of Sciences in 1987. Since graduation, he has worked at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Between 1999 and 2013 he was the director of the institute. Pope Leo XIV (born Robert Francis Prevost, September 14, 1955) has been head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State since May 2025. He is the first pope to have been born in the United States and North America, the first to hold Americans, American and Peruvian citizenship, the first from the Order of Saint Augustine, and the second from the Americas (after his predecessor Pope Francis, Francis). The Velvet Revolution () or Gentle Revolution () was a non-violent transition of power in what was then Czechoslovakia, occurring from 17 November to 28 November 1989. Popular demonstrations against the one-party government of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia included students and older dissidents. The result was the end of Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, 41 years of one-party rule in Czechoslovakia, and the subsequent dismantling of the command economy and conversion to a parliamentary republic.
