Paul Nauert
Paul Edward Nauert () (born July 7, 1963) is an American retired professional baseball umpire. He worked for the National League from 1995 to 1999 and for Major League Baseball from 2002 until his retirement in 2022. Nauert worked the 2017 World Series. Nauert graduated from the Harry Wendelstedt Umpires School in 1988, finishing at the top of his class. He later taught at the school. He also attended Jefferson Community College. Nauert worked in minor leagues in the Appalachian League (1988), Midwest League (1989–1990), Florida Instructional League (1988–1990), Southern League (1991–1992), and International League (1993–1998). He was the base umpire during the 27-inning, eight-hour-and-15-minute, Bluefield at Burlington game of June 24, 1988, that ended at 3:27 am the next morning. The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs, known simply as the National League (NL), is the older of two leagues constituting Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States and Canada, and the world's oldest extant professional team sports league. Founded on February 2, 1876, to replace the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NAPBBP) of 1871–1875 (often called simply the "National Association"), the NL is sometimes called the Senior Circuit, in contrast to MLB's other league, the American League, which was founded 25 years later and is called the "Junior Circuit". Both leagues currently have 15 teams. The National League survived competition from various other professional baseball leagues during the late 19th century. Most did not last for more than a few seasons, with a handful of teams joining the NL once their leagues folded. MLB China Series
The Major League Baseball China Series, or MLB China Series, were two spring training games between the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers played in the People's Republic of China. It marked the first time Major League Baseball teams played in China, part of an effort to popularize baseball in that country. The games were played on March 15 and 16 at the now-demolished Wukesong Baseball Stadium in Beijing. During the series, both teams visited the Great Wall of China and the Padres held a clinic for the students at Fengtai School. 1999 Major League Umpires Association Mass Resignation
The 1999 Major League Umpires Association mass resignation was a labor tactic used by 68 Major League Baseball (MLB) umpires, including 66 members of the Major League Umpires Association (MLUA), the official umpires union at the time. Unable to strike because they had a labor agreement in place at the time, 57 umpires formally resigned by orchestrated letters in an attempt to force negotiations with MLB for a new labor agreement. The American and National Leagues instead immediately hired new umpires and accepted 22 of the resignations. The union membership became fractured on the issue, and the umpires tried to rescind their resignations, but the MLUA was unsuccessful in retaining the jobs of the 22 umpires and the resignations were seen as final. The incident led to the decertification of the MLUA and the formation of a new union, the World Umpires Association (WUA), now the Major League Baseball Umpires Association.
