Patricia Gonçalves (politician)
Patrícia Carla Serrano Gonçalves (born 1971) is a Portuguese physicist, politician and member of the Assembly of the Republic, the national legislature of Portugal. A member of the LIVRE party, she was elected to represent Lisbon at the 2025 legislative election. Early life Gonçalves was born in 1971 in Barreiro. She has a degree in technological physics engineering and a doctorate in physics from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). Career Gonçalves is a professor in IST's Department of Physics and a researcher at the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particles Physics (LIP). She also coordinates a group that develops applications for space exploration in association with the European Space Agency and other European scientific institutes and companies. An ''Assembleia Municipal'' (; "municipal assembly"; plural: ''assembleias municipais'') is the legislature that governs a municipality in Portugal. Part of the assembly's members are elected every four years among candidate lists by the D'Hondt method, simultaneously with the election of the ''Câmara Municipal''; the remainder member are the presidents of the Junta de freguesia that compose the municipality, whose number cannot exceed the number of elected members. A municipal assembly generally meets five times a year, and its members are paid a presence fee for each meeting. It is a level higher than the Assembleia de freguesia. The Lisbon Municipal Chamber () is the administrative authority in the municipality of Lisbon. It has 24 freguesias in its area of jurisdiction and is based in the city of Lisbon, on the Lisbon District. The ''Diário da República'' (DR) is the official gazette of Portugal. Between 1869 and 1976, it was called the ''Diário do Governo''. It is published by the National Printing House and comprises two series. Laws, decree-laws, decisions by the Constitutional Court and other relevant texts are published in the I Series. Regulations, public contracts, etc. are published in the II Series. As in many countries, legislative texts are only binding after publication (article 119 of the Portuguese Constitution). 2017 Lisbon Local Election
The 2017 Lisbon local election was held on 1 October 2017 to elect the members of the Lisbon City Council. Against a fractured opposition, Fernando Medina, mayor since the resignation of António Costa in 2015, was elected for a full term, defeating Assunção Cristas ( CDS-PP leader) and Teresa Leal Coelho ( PSD). Despite the victory, the Socialist Party lost its majority by one seat, having to rely of the Left Bloc's support. The Unitary Democratic Coalition presented former MEP João Ferreira again and achieved similar results, and that guaranteed two Communist councilors. The Left Bloc, with Ricardo Robles as the candidate for Mayor, managed to gain a councillor seat for the first time in 10 years.
