Paseo De César Chávez
The Paseo de César Chávez is a Pedestrian zone, pedestrian paseo in Downtown San Jose, spanning across San Jose State University's campus. History Paseo de César Chávez was developed from 1994–1996 by San Jose State University, along with the Paseo de San Carlos and the 9th Street Paseo, as a part of a major campus revitalization plan. The paseo was created by the pedestrianization of San Carlos Street between 4th and 10th Streets. It was named in honor of the famed California civil rights activist César Chávez. Paseo de César Chávez was laid out to serve as the primary north-south pedestrian axis through San Jose State University's campus. Judith Francisca Baca (born September 20, 1946) is an American artist, activist, and professor of Chicano studies, world arts, and cultures based at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is the co-founder and artistic director of the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) in Venice, California. Baca is the director of the mural project that created the Great Wall of Los Angeles, which was the largest known communal mural project in the world as of 2018. Dolores Huerta
Dolores Huerta (born April 10, 1930) is an American labor leader and feminist activist. After working for several years with the Community Service Organization (CSO), she co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) with fellow activists Cesar Chavez and Gilbert Padilla, which eventually merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) to become the United Farm Workers (UFW). Huerta helped organize the Delano grape strike in 1965, managing boycott campaigns on the east coast and negotiating with the grape companies to end the strike. Some credit her with inventing the UFW slogan "" ( 'yes you can'). The ''Arch of Dignity, Equality, and Justice'', commonly referred to as the César Chávez Arch, is an art installation and monument consisting of a pearlescent plaster arch in the style of a Mayan corbelled arch and includes five Venetian tile mosaics. It was created by American artist Judy Baca, and is installed along the Paseo de César Chávez on the San Jose State University campus, in San Jose, California, United States. The four front-facing mosaics feature portraits of Dolores Huerta, Mahatma Gandhi, and two unnamed farmworkers, while the mosaic on the underside of the arch features Cesar Chavez encountering Robert Kennedy.
