Paraparap, Victoria
Paraparap is a locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. At the 2016 census, Paraparap had a population of 151 people. The Paraparap Parish was made available for sale in the 1850s, but was much less successful than other sales in the region, with slightly more than half of the lots being sold in the initial sales. The remaining lots were sold gradually over the subsequent decades, with some not being sold until the early twentieth century. Paraparap was first listed as an address in the 1890-91 directory. The area had a local progress association, the Paraparap and Pettavel Farmers' Progress Association, from March 1909. Modewarre, Victoria
Modewarre is a locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. The town adjoins Lake Modewarre. In the 2016 census, Modewarre had a population of 276 people. Modewarre Primary School began as a local Anglican school in the 1850s, became a vested National School in 1859, and closed in 1971. A post office at Modewarre opened in 1859 and closed in 1967. The Modewarre Memorial Hall was erected in 1923 in memory of World War I. The Modewarre Avenue of Honour on Cape Otway Road was planted in 1918, and is the last surviving Avenue of Honour in the Surf Coast Shire. Tree number #33 was planted to honour Albert Jacka, Australia's first winner of the Victoria Cross and a Modewarre local. Moriac, Victoria
Moriac is a town in Victoria, Australia, located approximately west of Geelong. It forms part of the Surf Coast Shire. At the 2016 census, Moriac had a population of 782. A Post Office opened on 1 August 1854 as Duneed, was renamed Mount Moriac in 1864, and Moriac in about 1909. The railway through Moriac opened in 1876, followed by the Wensleydale branch line which junctioned with the main line just past Moriac. The branch line opened in 1890 and closed in 1948. Moriac railway station was closed in October 1981. The town was surveyed in the 1920s, around the Moriac railway station, which had been provided to serve the adjacent community of Mount Moriac. The town was initially slow to develop, but has grown to house a population of several hundred. Though still heavily rural in nature, the town now serves as a satellite village of Geelong, with many residents travelling into the city to work. Freshwater Creek is a town in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. In the 2016 census, Freshwater Creek had a population of 414 people. The town comprises farming and rural properties, with a small township around the intersection of the Anglesea Road and Dickins Road, where there is a service station, a few shops and a cafe. The volunteer Country Fire Authority (CFA) building is in Dickins Road. Alongside is the Community Hall, tennis courts, BBQ, public toilets and playground. The Freshwater Creek Riding Club is next door to the Community Hall, and has a cross-country course along Duneed Creek. Opposite is Red Gum Run Arena Polo. Gherang is a locality in Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. It is located on the northern edge of the Great Otway National Park and the Anglesea Heath. At the 2006 census, Gherang had a population of 370. The area is mostly farmland, although there has been some rural-residential subdivision. Quarries in the area produce good quality gravel which is mostly used for roads. History Before British colonisation, the area had been home to the Gadubanud Aboriginal people for thousands of years. Settlement by Europeans began in the mid-19th century and, as a consequence, the number of Gadubanud people rapidly declined. The area was heavily forested and gravel suitable for roads was discovered. The Wensleydale railway line was completed in 1890, connecting the area to the Port Fairy railway line near Moriac, with the intention of inducing development along the route and transporting timber and firewood. The Surf Coast Shire is a local government area in the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia, located in the south-western part of the state. It covers an area of . It had a population of 32,251 in June 2018. It includes the towns of Aireys Inlet, Anglesea, Lorne, Moriac, Torquay and Winchelsea. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Winchelsea, Shire of Barrabool and part of the former City of South Barwon, which was, at that point, part of the City of Greater Geelong.
