Panionios Women's Basketball
Panionios Women's Basketball is the women's basketball department of Panionios GSS, the Greek multi-sport club based in Nea Smyrni. The first basketball department of the club was founded in 1919 and was one of the first in Greece. The women's department in turn was established in the post-war period. Its last reconstitution took place in the late 1990s. The club plays in A2 Ethniki (2nd tier) but recently it has played in A1 Ethniki. They have won one Greek Championship, in 2007. History Panionios Women's basketball team was founded in 1947. It took part in the local championship of Athens-Piraeus since those years there wasn't a Panhellenic women championship. The club ceased its activities for some years but it returned in action in the late 1990s. Panionios achieved to win the Panhellenic championship immediately after its promotion to A1 Ethniki. Greek Women's Basketball League
The Greek women's Basketball League, also known as A1 Ethniki (A1 National) Women's Basketball is the most important competition of Greek women's professional basketball. It is organised by the EOK (Hellenic Basketball Federation). It began with the 1967–68 season. The first championship of the league, which was held in the 1967–68 season, was organised by ΕΟΑΠ (Greek language, Greek: ''Ελληνική Ομοσπονδία Αθλοπαιδιών''). Two years later, the Hellenic Basketball Federation, EOK assumed control of the competition. Iraklis Thessaloniki Women's Basketball, Iraklis Thessaloniki won the inaugural championship of the league, in the 1967–68 season. From 1976 to 1999, Sporting Athens women's basketball, Sporting Athens dominated the competition, winning 20 championships in that period (they also won another championship in 2004). The Greek Women's Basketball Cup is the national women's basketball cup competition of Greece. It began with the 1995–96 season, and it is organised by the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK). Nea Smyrni
Nea Smyrni (, ''Néa Smýrni'', "New Smyrna") is a municipality and a town in South Athens, Greece. At the 2021 Greek census, 2021 census, it had 72,853 inhabitants. Panionios G.S.S. (Greek: Πανιώνιος Γυμναστικός Σύλλογος Σμύρνης, ''Panionios Gymnastikos Syllogos Smyrnis''), the ''Pan-Ionian Gymnastics Club of Smyrna'', is a Greek multi-sport club founded in 1890. Originally based in Smyrna/Izmir, the club was uprooted in the population exchange between Greece and Turkey following the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1922. It is now based in the suburban town of Nea Smyrni, located in the Attica, and where many of the refugees from Smyrna settled.
