PRESS Statistic
In statistics, the predicted residual error sum of squares (PRESS) is a form of cross-validation used in regression analysis to provide a summary measure of the fit of a model to a sample of observations that were not themselves used to estimate the model. It is calculated as the sum of squares of the prediction residuals for those observations. Specifically, the PRESS statistic is an exhaustive form of cross-validation, as it tests all the possible ways that the original data can be divided into a training and a validation set. In machine learning, a common task is the study and construction of algorithms that can learn from and make predictions on data. Such algorithms function by making data-driven predictions or decisions, through building a mathematical model from input data. Overfitting
In mathematical modeling, overfitting is "the production of an analysis that corresponds too closely or exactly to a particular set of data, and may therefore fail to fit to additional data or predict future observations reliably". An overfitted model is a mathematical model that contains more parameters than can be justified by the data. In the special case where the model consists of a polynomial function, these parameters represent the degree of a polynomial. Lazy Learning

Model selection is the task of selecting a model from among various candidates on the basis of performance criterion to choose the best one.
