Potato Cyst Nematode
Potato root nematodes or potato cyst nematodes (PCN) are 1-mm long roundworms belonging to the genus ''Globodera'', which comprises around 12 species. They live on the roots of plants of the family Solanaceae, such as potatoes and tomatoes. PCN cause growth retardation and, at very high population densities, damage to the roots and early senescence of plants. The nematode is not indigenous to Europe but originates from the Andes. Fields are free from PCN until an introduction occurs, after which the typical patches, or hotspots, occur on the farmland. These patches can become full field infestations when unchecked. Yield reductions can average up to 60% at high population densities. Biology and life cycle The eggs hatch in the presence of Solanoeclepine A, a substance secreted by the roots of host plants otherwise known as root exudates. The nematodes hatch when they grow into a second-stage juvenile (J2). At this stage, the J2 nematodes find host cells to feed off of. The pota ... Post Christum Natum
The term ''ante Christum natum'' ( Latin for ''before Christ (was) born''), usually abbreviated to a. Chr. n., a.Ch.n., a.C.n., A.C.N., or ACN, denotes the years before the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a Latin equivalent to the English " BC" ("before Christ"). The phrase ''ante Christum natum'' is also seen shortened to ''ante Christum'' ("before Christ"), similarly abbreviated to ''a. Chr.'', ''A. C.'' or ''AC''. A related phrase, p. Chr. n., p. Ch. n., or ''post Christum natum'' complements a. Ch. n. and is equivalent to "'' Anno Domini''" (AD). In English, these phrases are rare and AC, ACN, and ''ante Christum natum'' are not in the ''Chicago Manual of Style'' (14th edition), the ''American Heritage Dictionary'' (3rd edition), or P. Kenneth Seidelmann's ''Explanatory Supplement to the Astronomical Almanac'' (1992, University Science Books). In other European languages, such as Italian ("a.c." or "a.C." for ''avanti Cristo''), a vernacular version is the standard ... Penalty Charge Notice
In the United Kingdom, a fixed penalty notice (FPN) is a notice giving an individual the opportunity to be made immune from prosecution for an alleged criminal offence in exchange for a fee. Fixed penalty notices were introduced in Britain in the 1980s to deal with minor parking offences. Originally used by police and traffic wardens, their use has extended to other public officials and authorities, as has the range of offences for which they can be used. In recent years, this has taken the form of using them to give police and public authorities in England, Scotland and Wales a realistic weapon against anti-social behaviour. They are designed to reduce paperwork on police and council officers by allowing low-level anti-social behaviour to be dealt with on the spot. Newer types of notice exist for disorder, environmental crime, truancy and noise. A fixed penalty notice is not a fine or criminal conviction because of the distinction that the recipient can opt for the matter to be d ... Pecked Curvilinear Nucleated
Pecked curvilinear nucleated (PCN), in archaeology, is a form of prehistoric rock carving. The term was originally proposed by Teresa Miller and Reed Haslam in 1976 to describe a widespread type of rock carving in western North America. The form is characterized by a circular or oval groove element, which results in a raised center area. The form is quite prevalent in California and is applied to a number of Native American rock carving sites in this portion of the United States. Examples Occurrences of this type of rock carving can be found at Ring Mountain, Marin County, California,C. Michael Hogan, 2008 and in Lakeport, California. Program Composition Notation
Program Composition Notation (PCN) is a specification notation for building up larger programs from smaller modules or programs (usually written in C or Fortran). Efficient parallel programming is at the heart of PCN. Larger composed programs are intended to execute efficiently on single-processor machines, multiprocessors with shared memory or distributed multicomputers. PCN was developed at Argonne National Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology. PCN includes the language for specifying concurrent algorithms and interfaces to C and Fortran. There is also a PCN toolkit for workstations that allows applications to be developed for supercomputers which includes debugging and performance analysis tools. PCN is appropriate for applications benefiting from parallel computing such as fluid dynamics, and climate modelling Numerical climate models use quantitative methods to simulate the interactions of the important drivers of climate, including atmosphere, ocea ... Personal Computer News
''Personal Computer News'' (''PCN'') was a magazine publication which reviewed software and hardware for computers. It was published initially fortnightly, and during the boom period of home computing within the United Kingdom. It was published by VNU Publications and had a female editor, Cyndy Miles, unusual for computer magazines of the time.Lesley Wells, "My blind date with a home computer", ''The Times'', 9 April 1983. Its first issue was published on 12 March 1983. Its last issue, number 110, was published on 11 May 1985. It had a circulation of 150,000 in 1983. ''PCN'' had a lot of competition which peaked around mid-1984 with about 96 rival titles. It closed with an estimated £1 million in debts. ''PCN'' was unusual in being a weekly publication (most of its rivals were monthly with only two weeklies) and was a higher quality print with a glossy cover. Many of the monthlies were also glossies but ''PCN'' had the high cover price of 50p compared to the other weeklies. ...
