Owens Brown
Owens Brown is an American politician and activist serving as a member of the West Virginia Senate from the 1st district. He was appointed in September 2021, succeeding incumbent Democrat William Ihlenfeld, who retired to become the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia. Upon his appointment, Brown became the first African American man to serve in the West Virginia Senate. Brown also became just the second Black member in the Senate after Marie Redd. Personal Brown lives in Wheeling, West Virginia. Brown currently serves as the president of the West Virginia NAACP, a position he has held since 2015. Prior to his appointment, Brown worked for nearly 30 years as an organization development specialist for the West Virginia Education Association, and served as the human and civil rights coordinator. West Virginia's 1st Senate District
West Virginia's 1st Senate district is one of 17 districts in the West Virginia Senate. It is currently represented by Republican Ryan Weld and Republican Laura Wakim Chapman . All districts in the West Virginia Senate elect two members to staggered four-year terms. Geography District 1 is based in the Northern Panhandle, covering all of Brooke, Hancock, and Ohio Counties and parts of Marshall County. It includes the communities of Wheeling, Chester, New Cumberland, Weirton, Follansbee, Wellsburg, West Liberty, and Bethlehem. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is a civil rights organization in the United States, formed in 1909 as an interracial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans by a group including W. E. B. Du Bois, Mary White Ovington, Moorfield Storey and Ida B. Wells. Leaders of the organization included Thurgood Marshall and Roy Wilkins.
