Otto Herschmann
Dr. Otto Herschmann (4 January 1877 – 17 June 1942) was an Austrian Jewish swimmer, fencer, lawyer, and sports official. He is one of only a few athletes who have won Olympic medals in multiple sports, having received a silver medal in swimming in 1896 and a silver medal in fencing in 1912. He also worked as a lawyer, and served as president of the Austrian Olympic Committee and the Austrian Swimming Federation. Herschmann was murdered by the Nazis in 1942 during The Holocaust. Biography Herschmann was Jewish, and was born in Vienna, Austria. He was affiliated with the 1.W.A.S.C. in Vienna, and the Wiener AC in Vienna. Albert Bogen (born Albert Bógathy; October 31, 1882 – July 14, 1961) was a fencer who competed for Austria-Hungary at the 1912 Summer Olympics and for Hungary at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Bogen was Jewish, and was born in Kikinda, Serbia. Oszkár Gerde
Dr. Oszkár Gerde (8 July 1883 – 8 October 1944) was a Hungarian sabre fencer who won team gold medals at the 1908 and 1912 Olympics. After finishing his active career he judged international fencing competitions and worked as a lawyer. Being a Jew, he was deported from Hungary in 1944, and killed in the same year at the Mauthausen-Gusen Concentration Camp in Austria. Lajos Werkner
Lajos Werkner (23 October 1883 – 12 November 1943) was a Hungarian Olympic champion sabre fencer. Early and personal life Werkner was born in Budapest, Hungary, and was Jewish. Werkner was educated as a mechanical engineer. Fencing career Wernker trained at the Nemzeti Vívó Club (NVC) in Budapest. Werkner won team gold medals at the 1908 Olympics in London at 24 years of age, and at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm at 28 years of age, placing sixth-seventh individually. He won the Hungarian Championship in sabre in 1912–14. After retiring from competitions in 1914, Werkner remained active as a sports official. Dezső Földes (30 December 1880 in Miskolc, Kingdom of Hungary – 27 March 1950 in Cleveland, United States) was a Hungarian saber fencer. Jenő Fuchs
Jenő Fuchs (29 October 1882 – 14 March 1955) was a Hungarian sabre fencer. He competed at the 1908 and 1912 Olympics and won both the individual and team events at both Games. He missed the 1920 Olympics, where Hungary was not allowed to compete, and qualified for the 1924 Games, but left his place in the team to younger fencers. In 1982 he was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. The International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame ( he, יד לאיש הספורט היהודי, translit=Yad Le'ish HaSport HaYehudi) was opened July 7, 1981 in Netanya, Israel. It honors Jewish athletes and their accomplishments from anywhere around the world. It is located at the Wingate Institute for Physical Education and Sport. It has inducted over 400 athletes and sportspersons representing 40 countries. The Hall elects new honorees each year, with submissions due December 1 for votes for the following year, and a formal induction ceremony taking place several days prior to the Maccabiah Games every four years. Sabre
A sabre ( French: �sabʁ or saber in American English) is a type of backsword with a curved blade associated with the light cavalry of the early modern and Napoleonic periods. Originally associated with Central European cavalry such as the hussars, the sabre became widespread in Western Europe during the Thirty Years' War. Lighter sabres also became popular with infantry of the early 17th century. In the 19th century, models with less curving blades became common and were also used by heavy cavalry. Alfréd Hajós
Alfréd Hajós (1 February 1878 – 12 November 1955) was a Hungarian swimmer, football player and manager, and architect. He was the first modern Olympic swimming champion and the first Olympic champion of Hungary. No other swimmer ever won such a high fraction of all Olympic events at a single Games. He was also part of the first-ever team fielded by Hungary in 1902. Biography Hajós was born in Budapest, Hungary, as Arnold Guttmann, to a family of Jewish background. He was 13 years old when he felt compelled to become a good swimmer after his father drowned in the Danube River.
