Ottawa West—Nepean (provincial Electoral District)
Ottawa West—Nepean (french: Ottawa-Ouest–Nepean) is a provincial electoral district in eastern Ontario, Canada. It elects one member to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The riding is represented in the Ontario legislature by the NDP's Chandra Pasma. The riding has been fairly solidly Liberal. In the 1999 provincial election, former Member of Provincial Parliament Alex Cullen lost the nomination to Rick Chiarelli following fierce party battles. Cullen instead ran for the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP). The seat was won by Tory Garry Guzzo. In the 2003 provincial election, former Ottawa mayor Jim Watson ousted Guzzo. Former Ottawa mayor Bob Chiarelli won the seat in a March 4, 2010, by-election, after Jim Watson left his seat to run in the 2010 Ottawa municipal election. Chandra Pasma
Chandra Pasma (born c. 1980) is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2022 provincial election. She represents the district of Ottawa West—Nepean as a member of the Ontario New Democratic Party. Background Before her election as MPP for Ottawa West—Nepean, Pasma worked as a public policy researcher for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Previously, she served as an advisor to the federal New Democratic Party. Pasma has also worked for Citizens for Public Justice, and prior to that worked for Conservative MP Dave MacKenzie until 2006. 2003 Ontario General Election
The 2003 Ontario general election was held on October 2, 2003, to elect the 103 members of the 38th Legislative Assembly (Members of Provincial Parliament, or "MPPs") of the Province of Ontario, Canada. The election was called on September 2 by Premier Ernie Eves in the wake of supporting polls for the governing Ontario Progressive Conservative Party in the days following the 2003 North American blackout. Nepean (provincial Electoral District)
Nepean is a provincial electoral district that has existed from 1987 to 1999, and again since 2018. The riding was re-created federally with the 2012 redistribution process. That same process was followed by the Ontario government, meaning the provincial ridings follow a similar boundary division for the 2018 provincial election. Riding history Nepean was created in 1987 out of part of Carleton. It was represented by a Liberal MPP for eight years before it was won by then 25-year-old Progressive Conservative John Baird. Ottawa West (provincial Electoral District)
Ottawa West was a federal and provincial electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1935 to 1997 and in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1908 to 1926 and from 1955 to 1999. It covered the western part of the Ottawa area. Federal electoral district The federal district was created from Ottawa and part of Carleton in 1934. 2022 Ontario General Election
The 2022 Ontario general election will be held on or before June 2, 2022, to elect Members of Provincial Parliament to serve in the 43rd Parliament of Ontario. As of December 2016, Ontario elections are held on the first Thursday in June in the fourth calendar year following the previous general election. The Legislative Assembly of Ontario can be dissolved earlier by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario due to a motion of no confidence or if the Premier triggers a snap election. Since the current government has a majority, it is a near-certainty that any non-confidence vote would not pass. Jeremy Roberts (politician)
Jeremy Roberts (born November 10, 1991) is a former MPP Ottawa West—Nepean. He was first elected in the 2018 provincial election. In the 2022 Ontario general election, he was defeated by 908 votes to NDP candidate Chandra Pasma and was the only incumbent MPP from the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario to be defeated. Roberts credits his decision to enter politics to his brother who has autism. Prior and during his time in office, Roberts was a strong advocate for supporting individuals with autism and raising funds for the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. The 2010 Ottawa municipal election was a municipal election that was held on October 25, 2010, to elect the mayor of Ottawa, Ottawa City Council and the Ottawa-Carleton Public and Catholic School Boards. The election was held on the same date as elections in every other municipality in Ontario. Background In Ottawa's 2006 municipal election, newcomer Larry O'Brien defeated former city councillor Alex Munter and then-incumbent Bob Chiarelli in an election largely based on the expansion of Ottawa's light rail transit system. A Léger Marketing poll published by the ''Ottawa Sun'' on May 26, 2007 put O'Brien's approval ratings at 24%, and reported that if an election were held that day, he and Munter would have been tied with 35% of the vote of those surveyed. Bob Chiarelli
Robert Chiarelli (born September 24, 1941) is a Canadian politician. He was a Liberal member in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario who served from 1987 to 1997 and again from 2010 to 2018 who represented the ridings of Ottawa West and Ottawa West—Nepean. He was the Regional Chair of Ottawa-Carleton from 1997 to 2001 and was mayor of Ottawa from 2001 to 2006. He served in the provincial cabinets of Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne. Jim Watson (Canadian Politician)
James Alexander Watson (born July 30, 1961) is a Canadian politician who served as the 59th mayor of Ottawa from 2010 to 2022. Previously, he served as an Ottawa city councillor from 1991 to 1997, and as mayor from 1997 to 2000. Watson subsequently represented the riding of Ottawa West—Nepean in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2003 to 2010. Rick Chiarelli
Richard "Rick" Chiarelli (born c. 1964) is a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was an Ottawa City Councillor, and the second cousin of former Ottawa mayor and 2022 mayoral candidate Bob Chiarelli. He represented the College Ward covering part of Nepean and Ottawa's west end. On council, Chiarelli was known for being an "independent voice, often voicing dissent on issues his fellow councillors support" and now for "offensive and disreputable behaviour" and "incomprehensible incidents of harassment" against staff.
