Orria
Orria is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of South-western Italy. As of 2011, its population was of 1161. History The origins of town, around the 6th century, are uncertain, and possibly related to the destruction of the Ancient Greek city of Velia. Orria became an autonomous municipality in 1806, including also the town of Perito. Geography Located in the middle of Cilento, and part of its national park, Orria is a hilltown whose municipality borders with Gioi, Magliano Vetere, Monteforte Cilento, Perito, Salento and Stio. Its hamlets ('' frazioni'') are the villages of Casino Lebano (pop.: 69) and Piano Vetrale (pop.: 475). Paolo De Matteis
Paolo de Matteis (also known as ''Paolo de' Matteis''; 9 February 1662 – 26 January 1728) was an Italian painter. Biography He was born in Piano Vetrale, a hamlet of Orria, in the current Province of Salerno, and died in Naples. He trained with Francesco di Maria in Naples, then with Luca Giordano. He served in the employ of the Spanish Viceroy of Naples. From 1702 to 1705, de' Matteis worked in Paris, Calabria, and Genoa. In Genoa, he painted an ''Immaculate Conception with St. Jerome Appearing to St. Sevrio''. Returning to Naples, he painted decorative schemes for Neapolitan churches, including the vault of the chapel of San Ignatius in the church of Gesù Nuovo in Naples. Magliano Vetere is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. As of 2011 its population was 739. History The town, anciently named ''Malleanum'' or ''Mallianum'', was first mentioned in a document of the 9th century. It was a Norman ''state'' (internal subdivision of a baronial circumdary) that included Capizzo, Stio and Gorga. Heavily damaged in a fire in 1669, Magliano was rebuilt over a nearby hill, site of an ancient Goth castle, with the name of Magliano Nuovo ("New Magliano"). Some years later, the original site was rebuilt with the name of Magliano Vetere ("Old Magliano"). Gioi
Gioi is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. As of 2011 its population was of 1,339. History The comune of Gioi has a history that dates back well over 1000 years. The first permanent inhabitants may have been monks who settled there around the 11th century. The village was fortified in the 15th century, and parts of the fortifications still exist. The population peaked at about 18,000 in the mid 16th century before being decimated by a plague in 1556.
