Ormiston Fellmongery
Ormiston Fellmongery is a heritage-listed archaeological site of a former wool scour and fellmongery at Sturgeon Street, Ormiston, City of Redland, Queensland, Australia. It is also known as Fellmonger Park. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 18 September 2009. History A fellmongery was first established on the site in 1853, by Thomas Blacket Stephens, operating for around 10 years before ceasing operations. A second fellmongery was commenced on the site by Thomas Alford in 1894 which continued operations until the early 1920s. The land was subsequently used for farming before being resumed by the Redland Shire Council in the 1970s for use as parkland. After the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement was closed in 1839 areas around Moreton Bay were progressively surveyed to be opened up to free settlement. The year 1840 saw the arrival of pastoralists in the Moreton Bay District and by 1844 there were 17 large squatting runs, and by 1849 some 290,000 sheep. Brisban ... Ormiston is a coastal residential locality in the City of Redland, Queensland, Australia. In the , Ormiston had a population of 5,793 people. Geography Ormiston is adjacent to the localities of Cleveland and Wellington Point. The southern half is bisected by the Cleveland railway line with the locality served by Ormiston railway station (). Empire Point lies on the coast () adjacent to Tolston Terrace. The border in the west roughly aligns with Hillards Creek (). Newmarket is a north-west suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Newmarket had a population of 4,979 people. Geography Newmarket is located approximately by road from the Brisbane GPO. The Shire of Cleveland is a former local government area in the south-east of Queensland, Australia, centred on the town of Cleveland beside Moreton Bay. History On 11 November 1879, the Tingalpa Division was created as one of 74 divisions within Queensland under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879''. However, the residents of Cleveland sought to be independent of the division and on 29 May 1885, Cleveland Division was proclaimed as being separated from Tingalpa Division. Arthur Macalister
Arthur Macalister, (18 January 1818 – 23 March 1883) was three times Premier of Queensland, Australia. Early life Macalister was born in Glasgow, Scotland, son of John Macalister, a cabinet maker, and his wife Mary, ''née'' Scoullar. Macalister was educated in Glasgow and emigrated to Australia with his wife Elizabeth Wallace ''née'' Tassie. They arrived in Sydney on 28 September 1839 on the ''Abbotsford''. Macalister was appointed to the positions of clerk of Petty Sessions and postmaster at Scone, New South Wales in June 1840. In 1846 he was working for a solicitor in Sydney. In 1850 he was admitted as a solicitor and attorney. Political career Macalister then settled in the Moreton Bay district, then part of New South Wales. Macalister took part in the movement for separation, and was elected a representative for Ipswich in the New South Wales parliament on 14 June 1859. Charles Lilley
Sir Charles Lilley (27 August 1827 – 20 August 1897) was a Premier and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland. He had a significant influence on the form and spirit of state education in colonial Queensland which lasted well into the 20th century. South Brisbane, also known as Brisbane South, is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. Cleveland Point
Cleveland Point Light, also known as Point Cleveland Light, is a lighthouse located on the north-eastern tip of Cleveland Point, at Cleveland, Redland City, Queensland, Australia. It overlooks Moreton Bay to the east and Raby Bay to the west. The old lighthouse was established in 1864-1865 as a wooden hexagonal tower. It is one of only two surviving lighthouses of this form, the other being Old Burnett Heads Light. A newer light, constructed of a concrete post, replaced it in 1976, and the old lighthouse was relocated a short distance away, where it stands today. The newer light was removed in 2009. An early 1847 private beacon was replaced by a temporary government light in 1864, and then the permanent tower in 1865. The lens was upgraded twice, in 1874 and 1879. In 1934 the lighthouse was converted to electricity, and remained so until 1976 when it was deactivated and replaced by a concrete pile light constructed just away.
