Operation Montana Mauler
Operation Montana Mauler was a United States Army and US Marine Corps operation that took place north of Firebase Fuller, Quảng Trị Province, lasting from 23 March to 3 April 1969. Background In mid-March U.S. intelligence learnt that the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) 27th Regiment was moving south of the DMZ in an attempt to cut Route 9. A counter-infiltration operation was planned whereby the 3rd Squadron, 5th Armored Cavalry and the 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment would patrol the Khe Chua Valley north of Firebase Fuller. Operation The operation commenced on 23 March with the 3/5 Cavalry moving into the Khe Chua Valley meeting limited opposition. National Route 9 (Vietnam)
National Route 9 ( vi, Quốc lộ 9 (or abbrv. QL9) or Đường 9, links=no) runs across Vietnam roughly in line with the 17th Parallel. The route includes two segments. The segment called National Route 9A begins at Đông Hà and ends at Lao Bảo on the Vietnam-Laos border and is entirely within Quảng Trị Province. Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone
The Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone was a demilitarized zone established as a dividing line between North and South Vietnam from July 1954 to 1976 as a result of the First Indochina War. During the Vietnam War (1955-1975) it became important as the battleground demarcation separating North from South Vietnamese territories. The zone ceased to exist with the reunification of Vietnam on July 2, 1976, though the area remains dangerous due to the numerous undetonated explosives it contains. Geography The border between North and South Vietnam was in length and ran from east to west near the middle of present-day Vietnam within Quảng Trị Province. Beginning in the west at the tripoint with Laos, it ran east in a straight line until reaching the village of Bo Ho Su on the Bến Hải River. Firebase Fuller
Firebase Fuller (also known as Dong Ha Mountain or Hill 549) is a former U.S. Marine Corps, Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) firebase in central Vietnam. History The base was established on Dong Ha Mountain northeast of The Rockpile north of Highway 9 during Operation Lancaster II. The 3rd Battalion 9th Marines secured Fuller as part of Operation Virginia Ridge on 2 May 1969. By July the 1st Battalion 9th Marines had assumed responsibility of the area around Fuller. Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion 12th Marines provided artillery support at Fuller from May 1969 until September 1969 when the battery was withdrawn to Okinawa. In late September 1969 as part of Operation Keystone Cardinal the 3rd Marine Regiment began its withdrawal from South Vietnam handing over control of Fuller to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines.
