Operation Command East
Operational Command East (OC East) is a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces in eastern Ukraine. Its headquarters is currently located in Dnipro. History When Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1992, there were three Soviet military districts on its territory. These were the Kyiv Military District, Odessa Military District and the Carpathian Military District. In January 1998, the Southern Operational Command was created from the Odessa MD and the eastern part of Kyiv MD. In 2005, the Southern Operational Association was created from the Southern Operational Command. In October 2013, Operational Command South was created from the Southern Operational Association. In January 2015, Operational Command East was established with control over forces in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts. Serhii Ivanovych Naiev ( uk, Наєв Сергій Іванович; born 30 April 1970) is the Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (since 27 March 2020), holding the rank of Lieutenant general from December 2016. Biography Serhii Naiev was born on 30 April 1970, in Mohyliv-Podilskyi, Vinnytsia oblast. From 1987 to 1991, he studied at the Moscow Higher Military Command School, after which he obtained the military rank of lieutenant. The 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade Kholodnyi Yar () is a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. In October 2022 American military correspondent David Axe described the formation as "one of the most brutally effective" of Ukraine’s front-line brigades. History The brigade traces its history back to the 93rd Guards Rifle Division of the Soviet Union's Red Army, formed at Valuki in April 1943 from 13th Guards and 92nd Rifle Brigades. The 92nd Ivan Sirko Separate Mechanized Brigade ( uk, 92-га окрема механізована бригада, translit=92 okrema mekhanizovana bryhada), abbreviated 92 OMBr (), is a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. Its honorific name is after Cossack military leader Ivan Sirko. The unit was formed in 1999 as the 6th Mechanized Division based on the 6th Division of the National Guard of Ukraine. 54th Mechanized Brigade (Ukraine)
The 54th Mechanized Brigade is a brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, part of Operational Command East. The brigade is based in Bakhmut and was formed in 2014. The brigade fought in the war in Donbas and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. History Between 18 and 22 December 2016, the brigade fought in the Battle of Svitlodarsk. The fighting began with a pro-Russian separatist attack against the 54th's positions. The brigade counterattacked the separatist flank and captured new positions. During the fighting, nine of the brigade's soldiers were killed and 35 were wounded. Press reports at the time described the action as the bloodiest in the preceding five months. The Georgian Legion fought in eastern Ukraine under the overall command of the 54th Mechanized Brigade.
