Oostburg
Oostburg ( Zeelandic Flemish: ''Wòstburg'') is a city in the south-western Netherlands. It located in the municipality of Sluis, in the province of Zeeland. As of 1 January 2015, its population is 4731, down from 5008 in January 2005. It received city rights in 1237. Before 1 January 2003, Oostburg was also the name of a municipality. It merged with Sluis-Aardenburg to form the new municipality of Sluis. The municipality covered an area of 224.93 km², of which 1.05 km² was water. As well as the town of Oostburg, the former municipality also included the following towns, villages and townships: *Breskens * Cadzand *Groede * Hoofdplaat * IJzendijke *Nieuwvliet *Schoondijke *Waterlandkerkje * Zuidzande Oostburg is typically a tourist town very close to the beaches at Cadzand. Sluis
Sluis (; zea, label= Zeelandic, Sluus ; french: Écluse) is a town and municipality located in the west of Zeelandic Flanders, in the south-western Dutch province of Zeeland. The current incarnation of the municipality has existed since 1 January 2003. The former municipalities of Oostburg and Sluis-Aardenburg merged on that date. The latter of these two municipalities was formed from a merger between the previous municipality named Sluis and the former municipality of Aardenburg in 1995. History The town received city rights in 1290. In 1340 the Battle of Sluys was fought nearby at sea during the Hundred Years' War. There is a record of one of the first lotteries with money on 9 May 1455 of 1737 florins (US$170,000, in 2014). During the Eighty Years' War in 1587 the town was captured by Spanish troops under the Duke of Parma and was retaken in 1604 by a Dutch and English force under Maurice of Nassau. Liesbeth Messer-Heijbroek
Liesbeth Messer-Heijbroek (born Amsterdam, 25 April 1914: died Breda, 6 November 2007) was a Dutch sculptor and medal maker. Born Liesbeth Heijbroek, she studied in the city of her birth at the Rijksakademie (National academy) under both Jan Bronner and Theo van Reijn. In 1940 she married an architect called Willem Messer and the couple settled in Zeeland, in the south-west of the country. The war memorial (1948) in the main cemetery at Domburg was a project shared between the two of them. Cadzand
Cadzand is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located in the municipality of Sluis, about 8 km northwest of Oostburg. The village contains 790 inhabitants (2010). Better known to many visitors is the nearby beach at Cadzand-Bad. Cadzand was the scene of two battles during the Hundred Years' War *1337- Battle of Cadzand *1387-Battle of Margate Under the Secret Treaty of Dover, concluded in 1670 between Charles II of England and Louis XIV of France, England was supposed to get possession of Cadzand as well as Walcheren, as the reward for helping France in the then impending war against the Dutch Republic. IJzendijke
IJzendijke is a city in the municipality of Sluis, about 10 km east of Oostburg, in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The town received city rights in 1303. History The town was first mentioned in 1127 as Isendica, and means " dike of Iso (person)". IJzendijke used to be a possession of the Saint Peter's Abbey in Ghent. In 1127, it joined the Flemish Hanseatic League. In 1303, it received city rights. It was flooded in 1374, and lost completely in the St. Elizabeth's flood of 1404. In 1587, a sconce was constructed by the Spanish troops, and conquered by Maurice, Prince of Orange in 1604. Two '' polder''s were constructed, and after 1618, an octagon fortress was built with a central market square. In 1648, IJzendijke became a garrison city. Nieuwvliet
Nieuwvliet is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located about 5 km north of Oostburg, in the municipality of Sluis The village was first mentioned in 1514 as Nieuvliet. "Vliet" means stream. Nieuw (new) was added to distinguish from another vliet, however there are multiple candidates. The current village developed after the Groote Sint Annapolder was '' poldered'' in 1602. Around 1650, the ''polder'' contained two hamlets: Nieuwvliet and Sinte Pier. Nieuwvliet was home to Dutch Reformed, and Sint Pier to Mennonites. The Mennonites built a church in 1656, and the Dutch Reformed followed in 1658. Most of the Mennonites left, and the congregation of Sinte Pier was dissolved in 1777. The Dutch Reformed church was damaged during World War II and restored in 1949. Nieuwvliet was home to 830 people in 1840. Waterlandkerkje
Waterlandkerkje is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located in the municipality of Sluis. The village was first mentioned in 1740 as "de Kerk op Waterland, en doorgaans Nieuw of Klein Kerkje geheeten", and means "little church of Waterland". Waterland was a region which was flooded in 1375. The church was established around 1670 by Protestants who went to church in in the Spanish Netherlands (nowadays: Belgium), but who were removed by force by the Catholics. The church originally stood in Waterland-Oudeman but was moved across the border. The church burned down in 1708, and was rebuilt in 1713. Sluis-Aardenburg was a municipality in the province of Zeeland, in the south-western part of the Netherlands. It was created from a merger of Sluis and Aardenburg in 1995, and it merged with the municipality of Oostburg, on 1 January 2003, to form the new municipality of Sluis. Breskens
Breskens is a harbour town on the Westerschelde in the municipality of Sluis in the province of Zeeland, in the south-western Netherlands. Its population is 4,787 (). The town is noted for the ''Visserijfeesten'' (Fishery Festival), the largest festival in Zeeland. A ferry connection exists between Breskens and Vlissingen. After the opening of the Western Scheldt Tunnel near Terneuzen in 2003, the ferry now only carries pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Sights The lighthouse of Breskens is the oldest remaining cast-iron lighthouse in the Netherlands. It was built in 1867 and became a monument in 1982. Schoondijke
Schoondijke is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located in the municipality of Sluis, about 5 km south of Breskens. History Originally, the village was called Wlendike from 1150 onwards, and means "dirty dike". From 1250 onwards it was called "in Sconendiic" and means "clean dike". The old village disappeared between 1583 and 1585 when the land was inundated. In 1652, it was founded for a second time. The grist mill Hulsters Molen was built in 1884, but was damaged by fire and rebuilt in 1900. In 1944, it was damaged by war, but still able to operate. It was in use until 1970. Groede
Groede () is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located about 5 km north of Oostburg in the municipality of Sluis. History The village was first mentioned in 1133 as Groede, and means "land accretion". The oldest village was lost in a flood in 1375. It was later polder, but inundated in 1583. In 1604, the area was conquered by the Dutch Republic. In 1612, it was a rediked, and a planned settlement with a large square containing the church in the middle was constructed. The Dutch Reformed church is a three-aisled church with 13th century elements. The church was severely damaged during the inundation of 1583 to 1613. Restoration started in 1619. From 1618 until 1808, the southern part of the church was a Walloon church. The tower was struck by lightning in 1949 and restored in 1950. Groede was home to 2,408 people in 1840.
